PINKSHIFT RETURNS TO #1, EARNS HISTORIC TOP 5 DEBUT FOLLOWING CONCERT
This week is an immense week for Pinkshift, the Baltimore pop punk band who've been one of the Burner 50's biggest acts of the last year, after I got to see the band in concert in Phoenix this past Sunday. The fourth pre-release single from their debut album Love Me Forever, the piano ballad "In A Breath" - a notable outlier for both the band and this chart - returns to #1 for a second nonconsecutive week after an unexpected upset last week from Militarie Gun's "Let Me Be Normal", which retreats to #2 this week. "In A Breath" has strongly impressed me since its release for the powerful, emotional and raw vocal performance of lead singer Ashrita Kumar - in both the studio recording and the song's live video from concert videographer Hate5six, you can tell Kumar was crying while performing the song - and for boldly diverging from the heavy music they built their following with.
In addition to "In A Breath" returning to #1, Pinkshift scores their best debuting song yet as "Burn The Witch", a highlight from Love Me Forever, enters all the way at #5. "Burn The Witch" emerged as a clear favorite among the album's tracks following the album's release and got attention from a number of Spotify playlists, but it didn't instantly impact my chart to avoid overexposing the band on the M4B Radio Top 40. Notably, "Burn The Witch" is the chart's first ever top 10 debut for a song whose parent album had been released at least four weeks earlier; the other top 10 debuts came before an album release or on the album release week. The previous high mark for a non-instant impact was Microwave's former #1 "Lighterless", which debuted at #12 eight months after its single release and three months after its parent album Much Love was released. Jerry Cantrell came close to besting it this spring with the #14 debut of "Had To Know", another former #1 and another song whose high debut was thanks to a concert.
Turnstile, another Baltimore band with an incredible Burner 50 hit streak, also get a concert-related boost as "Holiday" rebounds 4-3; the song spent three weeks at #1 last year and re-entered following its promotion to alternative radio and anticipation for seeing them in concert this Monday. Elsewhere in the top 10, Soul Blind lock down the remaining spot in the top 5 with "System (Failing)" down 3-4, while Tigercub land their third top 10 with "The Perfume Of Decay" up 14-10.
In a stacked week for debuts, Narrow Head enters at #39 with the title track from their upcoming third album "Moments Of Clarity", aiming to follow up a streak of three top 10s from their previous album 12th House Rock, and Royal Thunder return at #42 with "The Knife", marking the Georgia metal band's first new music since 2017 when they charted two songs from their album Wick including the #1 "April Showers". Rounding out the new entries are one of the openers on Pinkshift's tour, Jigsaw Youth, at #46 with "Skin", and White Reaper at #47 with "Pages", following up their 2019 breakthrough era You Deserve Love, whose lead single "Might Be Right" was my #2 song of that year.
