SOUL BLIND EARNS SECOND #1; TURNSTILE COMPETES FOR HISTORIC MILESTONE
Soul Blind land their second Burner 50 #1 this week with the fast gaining "System (Failing)", which vaults 4-1 in just its fourth week on the chart. The second single from their upcoming full-length debut album Feel It All Around follows the first single, "Stuck In A Loop", which led for two weeks last month. "System (Failing)" has benefited from strong play in recent days and, like "Stuck", crossover chart support from Lyhom and Jessica's Top 40. Pinkshift retreat 1-2 with "Get Out" after leading for the last two weeks, but with their debut album Love Me Forever out next week, it's likely it or their fast-climbing "In A Breath" (up 10-5 this week) could ride the momentum back to the top. (Between both Soul Blind and Pinkshift, Burner 50 super producer Will Yip has had a hand on five of the last seven #1s, a streak that's helped him now become the producer with my chart's most #1s with 11. The previous record holder, Colin Brittain, had nine #1s for his work on Basement's Beside Myself and Teenage Wrist's Earth Is A Black Hole.)
Also fighting for #1 is... a former #1. Turnstile's "Holiday", currently gaining on alternative radio amid a wave of publicity for the latest leg of their Turnstile Love Connection Tour (which I will be seeing in November) and being announced as support acts for Blink 182's reunion tour, spent three weeks at #1 last year (a reign that likely would have been longer if it didn't have to compete with Jerry Cantrell's unstoppable "Atone") but is back on the chart based on the aforementioned single release and publicity wave, now up 7-4 five weeks after its re-entry. With heavy anticipation looming to see them in concert, Turnstile is aiming to do what no former #1 has done before - top the chart in two runs. Three other songs re-charted with a sizable second run after reaching #1 - Basement's "Promise Everything", which spent eight weeks at #1 from late 2015 to early 2016, re-entered in spring 2017 following its re-release timing with their signing to Fueled By Ramen and made it as high as #2 behind "The Underside Of Power" by Algiers. Childish Gambino's "Redbone" topped for two weeks not long after its late 2016 release, then re-entered after it made the pop charts and hit #18 in its second run. And another Turnstile song, their first #1 "Mystery", re-entered after cracking the alternative and active rock radio charts earlier this year and got as high as #7.
Only one new song enters this week's top 10, Quicksand's "Giving The Past Away", up 12-9 to become the post-hardcore band's fifth to get there. UK rock band Tigercub has the week's top debut with "The Perfume Of Decay" at #31, their first single released with Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard's record label Loosegroove. Tigercub is following up two top 10 hits from last year, "Beauty" and "Stop Beating On My Heart (Like A Bass Drum)".
