Interesting read. I didn't know about that one either. But they were kind of mixing apples with oranges talking about singles when the article's focus was on the Billboard 200.

Crazy to think that, early on, everything was based on a record store clerk’s impressions of sales!
I hate to admit it but streaming is probably the most accurate way of determining audience presently. They just need to figure out how to differentiate ‘full album streams’ from ‘Song streams’.. but it’s already too late for that.
I expected lastfm to become the flagship of charts.. but that site went down the drain. It’s just horrible now and unrealiable.

The weakness of streams is that it’s still fairly youth-focused. So we have accurate readings of music consumption from the demographics of the population that use streaming but those who still buy music don’t contribute toward the Hot 100 and only contribute one time toward the album chart. Tbh it might not make a HUGE difference because as people get older they’re less likely to listen to the same music as frequently as younger people. But in cases like Adele or Taylor Swift album releases, their songs don’t dominate the Hot 100 the way a Drake or Future album release would, even if their unit sales equivalent total is on par with each other.
