BATTLE OF THE MANORS: JOYCE MANOR EARNS THIRD WEEK AT #1, BOSTON MANOR CHALLENGES FOR THIRD #1
Two similarly named Unkiecore bands co-lead this week's Burner 50 as California's Joyce Manor holds down the #1 spot for a third week and the UK's Boston Manor earns their fourth top 2, aiming for their third #1. Joyce Manor's "Gotta Let It Go", the lead single from their upcoming album 40 Oz. To Fresno and the band's first ever #1 hit, now joins a three-way tie with 2022's other three-week chart toppers, Hatchie's "Quicksand" and Oso Oso's "Pensacola", as the year's second longest reigning #1 so far; the current high mark is four weeks, achieved by the Loathe and Teenage Wrist collab "Is It Really You?" While Joyce Manor stands a good chance of tying or surpassing that mark, Boston Manor threatens it with an instant impact into the top 10 with "Foxglove", up 12-2 in its third week in the top 50. The band is aiming to repeat the decisive dominance on the chart they held around this time two years ago when "Plasticine Dreams" and "Ratking" both became unexpected #1 hits, and eventually, two of the biggest of 2020 ("Ratking" was my #1 song of the year; "Plasticine Dreams" came in at #4).
The Manor bands (or "Maynor" bands as listeners of the M4B Radio Top 40 may call them) are both leaders of the current wave of young rock bands, with Joyce Manor performing pop-indebted punk and emo music where practically every line in their songs is a hook, and Boston Manor starting out as a pop punk band but evolving into a genre-blurring act fusing 90s grunge and hard rock, 2000s post-hardcore, and electronic influences in their sound. Joyce Manor got their name from an apartment complex near lead singer Barry Johnson's house; Boston Manor shares a name with a historic house in London, though the band took the name from the name of one of frontman Henry Cox's friend's demo tapes.
Apart from Joyce Manor extending their lead to a third week, the second single from 40 Oz. To Fresno, "Don't Try", is the top debut in an eventful debut week (more on that later), entering at #28.
In non-Manor chart news, Citizen also is a frontrunner for #1 with their one-off single "Bash Out", up 9-3 in its third week, while JessieLou lands her fourth top 5 entry in two years with "Don't Talk To Me On Sunday" up 6-4, and also debuts at #35 with the presumptive third single from Love Is Blind, "Jealousy". A week after debuting, Jerry Cantrell's "Had To Know" jumps 14-10 into the top 10, becoming the sixth consecutive song from Brighten to get there.
A notable debut comes from The Dear Hunter's latest song "Ring 7 - Industry" at #36, released Friday as the lead single from the band's upcoming album Antimai. The new song instantly outpeaks the band's previous entry "The Indigo Child", which infamously peaked at a highly disappointing #38.
