HEAVENWARD EARN FIRST #1 ON SIXTH TRY WITH "SUPERNOVA"
Heavenward, the grunge/shoegaze/emo spinoff of Burner 50 core artists Teenage Wrist featuring its former frontman Kamtin Mohager and current frontman Marshall Gallagher, finally earn their first Burner 50 #1 song after five near misses with "Supernova", the lead track from their recently released three song EP Staircase Music. "Supernova" ends the three-week reign of Hatchie's "Quicksand" and leapfrogs JessieLou's "02.05.2011" to mark a significant turnaround for Heavenward after largely standing in the shadows of the main band.
Four of the first five Heavenward entries peaked at #3 or #4, suffering from having to compete with the Wrist's own work - most recently, "Wish" was held back by the Wrist's remix of Loathe's "Is It Really You?" "Cartwheels", the first song featuring Mohager, Gallagher and producer Carlos De La Garza since the Wrist's 2018 M4B essential album Chrome Neon Jesus, came close to reaching #1 last year but settled for #2 thanks to a massively strong rally from Turnstile's "Holiday". (Both were eventually cast aside by the even more successful "Atone" by Jerry Cantrell.)
Meanwhile on the chart, the Red Hot Chili Peppers move 4-3 with "Black Summer", placing themselves in contention for their second #1 and first since "Dark Necessities" in 2016, while HEALTH and Lamb of God's "Cold Blood" builds on its surprisingly strong rally to reach a new peak of #6. No new songs enter the top 10 this week, but it's likely Oso Oso - who just released their fourth studio album Sore Thumb only two days after announcing it - will get there next week with the lead single "Pensacola", up 18-11.
Dazy and Militarie Gun earn the week's top debut with their collaboration "Pressure Cooker" at #42. It's the second entry for Dazy, the one-man power pop band of James Goodson, whose song "See The Bottom" from last year's EP The Crowded Mind made it as high as #27; and first for Militarie Gun, a side project of Ian Shelton of the hardcore band Regional Justice Center.
