LOATHE/TEENAGE WRIST COLLAB BREAKS/TIES/EXTENDS #1 RECORDS, BECOMES BURNER 50'S MILESTONE 100TH #1
After overwhelmingly strong play counts 10 days following its release, the collaboration between British progressive metal band Loathe and California rock duo Teenage Wrist quickly ascends to #1 on the Burner 50, achieving not only record impacts but a chart milestone. Loathe and Teenage Wrist's "Is It Really You?", a reworked version of a song Loathe released in 2020, jumps 16-1 in only its second week on the chart. The song now ties the record for the biggest jump to #1, set by Basement in 2016 with "Aquasun".
"Is It Really You?" is the first #1 for Loathe, whose previous best was #8 with "Two-Way Mirror", and the 10th for Teenage Wrist, extending the band's record for the chart's most #1s set last year with their streak of huge hits from their second album, Earth Is A Black Hole. It also expands on Teenage Wrist's place in chart history as one of the most successful artists of all time - it's their seventh consecutive #1 in a streak that began with 2019's "Mary", breaking Milk Teeth's record of six. Teenage Wrist also becomes the first artist in Burner 50 history to have two songs climb to #1 from outside the top 10, something they last accomplished with the 11-1 move for their first #1 "Dweeb" almost exactly four years ago.
Fitting for the song's lofty achievements, "Is It Really You?" also marks a big chart milestone - the Burner 50's 100th song to reach #1. The Burner 50, first known as the #timetogetaheadache Top 30, launched in 2015 as a way for me to track new releases I was playing the most and/or most interested in for a given week, and debuted with Citizen's "Cement" as the first #1.
Jerry Cantrell slips to #2 with "Nobody Breaks You" after two weeks at #1 because of the decisive impact of the Loathe/Wrist collab, despite getting Brighten on vinyl and its recent moves to #1 on the M4B Radio Top 40 and #10 on the Globalchart. But getting the Brighten vinyl still made this a big week for Jerry because of other significant chart moves. Former seven-week #1 "Atone" yet again rebounds, up 18-15; the song, which ranked as my #5 of 2021, hasn't been lower than #20 since debuting six months ago, and had been on a steady rebound thanks to greater exposure during year end season. "Siren Song", which peaked at #8, rebounds 40-33. And the title track, which reached #3, re-enters the chart at #44 just two weeks after falling off.
Also entering this week's top 10 is "Glisten" by Kills Birds, up 12-8; the LA band, whose style fuses grunge and post-punk, is best known for being an opening act for the Foo Fighters' most recent tour. Young Guv earns his third top 10 and first in more than two years with "Only Wanna See U Tonight" up 13-9, while Circa Survive's "Electric Moose" gets a 22-10 bump in its second week.
As Teenage Wrist returns to #1, former member Kamtin Mohager's project Heavenward earns the week's highest debut with "Wish", the lead single from the upcoming three-song EP Staircase Music, at #19. Out of their five entries, "Wish" becomes the fourth whose chart run coincides with a Wrist single; their first three entries, "Hole", "In A Dream" and "MJ-12" were beaten to #1, respectively, by "Silverspoon", "Earth Is A Black Hole" and "Wear U Down".
