OVLOV PULLS #1 UPSET, LANDS TWO MORE TOP 10S THANKS TO VINYL PURCHASE
The meteoric rise of an obscure Connecticut band wearing the influences of 90s indie rock on their sleeves has culminated in a shocking #1 upset, helped by my purchase of their latest album on vinyl. Ovlov, formed in the late 2000s and surviving multiple breakups to release three studio albums to date, has reached #1 with the song that kicked off their latest era, "Land Of Steve-O", up 3-1 in its ninth week in the Burner 50. "Land Of Steve-O" - its title a nod to both the titular "Jackass" star and the band's lead singer Steve Hartlett - was able to leap past Webbed Wing's "Dream Come True" (1-2) after my purchase of Ovlov's latest album, Buds. It's one of many songs to take the lead after purchasing its parent album; Citizen's "Flowerchild" earned its week at #1 following my purchase of As You Please, Milk Teeth's "Sharks" topped following my purchase of their 2020 self-titled, Deftones' "Genesis" began its three-week reign after buying Ohms, and most recently, "Buried In The Sun" by Thrice landed a week at #1 after buying the band's latest album Horizons/East.
The momentum for "Land Of Steve-O" escalated in early November following light play in the preceding weeks, with a highly positive response to the follow-up "The Wishing Well" helping inspire both songs to get strong attention, a rarity in a community where the idea of releasing so many singles all at once ("King Princessing" as it's often called) typically leads to backlash. "The Wishing Well" also rallies this week with a 12-3 jump. The pair of major hits, with another song, "Eat More", building fast (it moves 33-10 in its second week), contrasts with their last album Tru - lead single "Spright" lingered in the Next in Line list and failed to chart, falling victim to a highly competitive period in the summer of 2018 defined by the continued dominance of Teenage Wrist and the endurance of future M4B genre hits "Dance Macabre" by Ghost, "Be Your Man" by Demob Happy and the aforementioned "Flowerchild".
Failure, the space rock band best known for their 1996 rock radio hit "Stuck On You", has the week's top debut at #39 with "Headstand", taken from the band's latest album Wild Type Droid. The week's debuts also include JessieLou's "My Opinion" at #46; the release of the M4B Radio leader's debut album, Take Me As I Am, is slated to be one of the lead topics of an upcoming M4B Radio-themed podcast that will premiere later this month.
