TURNSTILE EARN THIRD BURNER 50 #1 WITH "BLACKOUT"
Bolstered by a meteoric turnaround and its promotion to active rock radio, Turnstile have earned their third Burner 50 #1 and third from their third album Glow On with "Blackout", which advances 3-1 in the song's ninth week in the top 50, a much longer trip to the top than the instant impacts of "Mystery" and "Holiday", which collectively spent eight weeks at #1 before Jerry Cantrell interrupted the Baltimore band's lead with "Atone". In a twist of fate, it's "Blackout" that dethrones "Atone", down 1-3 after an impressive seven-week reign.
"Blackout" initially peaked at #15, then plunged out of the top 30 out of annoyance over the band's frequency of promotional single releases, a phenomenon members of M4B call "King Princessing". But overwhelmingly positive response to Glow On caused it to rebound as fast as it fell, with its gains in the last two weeks motivated by strong play on my own, greater exposure to it via Sirius XM's Octane channel, and its initial success on active rock radio. "Blackout" is not the only recent #1 that marked a turnaround after a setback; Teenage Wrist's record-extending ninth #1 "Wear U Down" hit a wall after early impact, peaking at #5 and falling fast, but recovered shortly after it debuted on Jessica's Top 40 and Pipa's Top 30 and went on to spend three weeks on top.
Meanwhile, Thrice continues to hold at #2 with "Robot Soft Exorcism", while Cantrell's "Brighten" joins "Atone" in the top 5 with a 6-4 move. Three new songs enter the top 10, JessieLou's third M4B Radio Top 40 #1 and Globalchart top 20 "Left On Read" (12-6), Webbed Wing's "Make A Dime" (27-7 in its second week) and Every Time I Die's "Post-Boredom" (11-9).
Following last week's nine-debut chart purge, only one new song debuts this week, Mastodon's "Pushing The Tides" at #41; it's the lead single from the band's upcoming album Hushed and Grim and their third song to reach the top 50. Two spots above, Manchester Orchestra re-enters with their #23-peaking "Telepath", which will be the second radio single from The Million Masks Of God.
