TURNSTILE EARNS THIRD WEEK AT #1, BUT NEW JERRY CANTRELL SINGLE THREATENS ITS DECISIVE DOMINATION
Turnstile continues its decisive lead at #1 on the Burner 50 with "Holiday", extending its reign for a third consecutive week and an eighth consecutive week overall for the band. "Holiday" has enjoyed an easy path to victory thanks to a wide gap between it and other new songs receiving play from me - a gap of 13 spins at last count - but a massive debut for the most anticipated new release of 2021 on M4BCC puts its decisive hold on the top under immediate threat.
Alice In Chains frontman Jerry Cantrell's new single "Atone", from his third solo album Brighten - his first since 2002's Degradation Trip - enters at #3 following its Thursday release on the strength of overwhelming hype and anticipation that built up for the release over the last four months following a JessieLou King-making The Book Club episode spotlighting Cantrell's solo material. The song marks Cantrell's first charting entry since Alice In Chains reached #8 with "Fly" in late 2019. Cantrell previously hit #2 twice, first as a solo artist credited for the guitar solos in Deftones' 2016 hit "Phantom Bride" and again with Alice In Chains in 2018 with "The One You Know", the lead single from the band's most recent album Rainier Fog.
"Atone" also becomes only the sixth song in the Burner 50's six-year history to debut in the top 3 and the third in 2021; the others are Basement's "Disconnect" (#1, 2018), Milk Teeth's "Destroyer" (#3, 2019), Teenage Wrist's "Earth Is A Black Hole" (#2, 2020) and Citizen's "I Want To Kill You" (#1) and "Blue Sunday" (#3, both 2021). It's also the second top 10 Burner 50 debut from an artist who didn't previously reach #1 prior to the debut, following The 1975 who debuted at #7 with "Love Me" in late 2015. Given that all of those songs eventually reached #1, "Atone" is likely to follow suit.
Between Turnstile and Cantrell, losing #1 in a distant second is Quicksand's "Missile Command". It's now the best peaking song for the band, beating their inaugural entry "Illuminant", which hit #4 in 2017. It also matches the peak frontman Walter Schreifels achieved with Dead Heavens' "Basic Cable" that same year. "Missile Command" is the fourth Will Yip-produced song to reach #2 since May 2018, when he earned his most recent production to reach #1, "Flowerchild" by Citizen. It follows mewithoutYou's "Another Head For Hydra" in 2018, Turnover's "Much After Feeling" in 2019, and Pærish's "Fixed It All" last year. (Ironically, Yip's latest attempt was thwarted by a band whose last album he produced.)
Cantrell leads four new top 10 entries, also including Thrice's "Scavengers" (15-7), Sam Fender's "Seventeen Going Under" (12-8) and Turnstile's "Alien Love Call" (11-9), as well as five debuts, which coincidentally includes another Turnstile song, "Blackout", at #37.
