TURNSTILE EARNS SECOND BURNER 50 #1, THWARTING HEAVENWARD ATTEMPT FOR FIRST
Just one week after a massive top 15 debut, overwhelmingly heavy plays and buzz over the announcement of their upcoming third album Glow On has propelled Turnstile's "Holiday" to #1, advancing 12 spots from #13 last week. Turnstile now earns the chart's second biggest leap to #1 in chart history, just behind Basement's "Aquasun", which jumped 16-1 in January 2016 following the release and super heavy rotation of their third album Promise Everything. "Holiday" becomes Turnstile's second #1, replacing their first, "Mystery", which slides to #2 after a five-week reign.
Like last week, Turnstile again earns a top 20 debut, entering at #18 with their latest single "Alien Love Call", which features Blood Orange. "Holiday" and "Alien Love Call" are Turnstile's second and third songs to debut in the upper portion of my chart, following "Moon", which entered at #17 in January 2018.
Turnstile notably thwarted an attempt by Heavenward, the band featuring former Teenage Wrist singer Kamtin Mohager, to earn its first #1. "Cartwheels", which hit #2 last week, slides to #3 due to Turnstile's rally this week. So far, #2 is the highest rank Mohager reached without his former band, and he has not been a part of a Burner 50 #1 since the Wrist's 2019 blockbuster hit "Mary".
While one longtime #1 holdout's attempt fizzles, another is gaining momentum. Will Yip, the producer of Turnstile's previous album Time & Space and many other albums by Burner 50 core artists, is looking to earn his first #1 in three years as songs he produced for Nothing, "Famine Asylum" (up 15-9 to become the band's eighth top 10 hit and fifth from their current album The Great Dismal) and Quicksand, "Missile Command" (up 20-11), are gaining ground. Yip, a prolific indie producer, songwriter and engineer who's worked with the likes of Burner 50 hitmakers Citizen, Circa Survive and Turnover, hasn't been involved with a Burner 50 #1 since Citizen's "Flowerchild" spent a week at #1 in May 2018. Besides Nothing, the Foo Fighters reach the top 10 this week with "Making A Fire", which moves 11-10 to become the band's seventh to get there.
Debuting this week, besides Turnstile, are Poppy's "Her", Descendents' "Nightage" and DZ Deathrays' "Kerosene".
