BURNER 50'S HALF-YEAR DUOPOLY ENDS WITH GARBAGE'S FIRST #1
From November to April, a rolling six-month cycle went by on the Burner 50 with only two bands reaching #1: Teenage Wrist and Citizen. Extremely high anticipation for Teenage Wrist's Earth Is A Black Hole, released in February, and Citizen's Life In Your Glass World, released in March, led both acts to co-lead the chart for a half-year period, with the Wrist at #1 for 16 of the last 26 weeks and Citizen #1 the remaining 10. And just as it looked like yet again the duopoly would sustain itself, an unexpected source - a band whose previous high mark was only #17 - has disrupted the domination that's defined the year to date.
Garbage, the long running electronic rock band fronted by Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson and featuring Nevermind producer Butch Vig, climbs 2-1 with "The Men Who Rule The World" in the song's sixth week in the top 50. The result of an overwhelmingly strong M4B genre rally - despite its radio unfriendly sound and frequent F-bombs, it managed to become Garbage's highest charting Globalchart hit and so far reached #2 on the M4B Radio Top 40 - the success of "Men" lands the band their first chart topper with a song that already was their best charting by far, surpassing the #17 rank "Empty" earned five years ago. Garbage also becomes the third JessieLou Queen or King to hit #1 on the Burner 50, following the Cranberries in 2019 with "Wake Me When It's Over" and Chris Cornell in 2020 with "Patience".
Despite Garbage ending the half-year, two-band domination of the #1 spot, Citizen is aiming to top the chart, potentially as soon as next week, with "Death Dance Approximately", up 5-3. The fourth entry from Life In Your Glass World seeks to become the era's third #1 and Citizen's seventh overall. Meanwhile, Fiddlehead continues a rapid ascent up 9-4 with "Million Times", becoming the band's first top 5 entry and first such appearance for Basement guitarist Alex Henery since Basement's last charting appearance, "Are You The One", which reached #2 in 2019.
Elsewhere on the chart, Australian acts DZ Deathrays and Ecca Vandal score a major jump into the top 10 with "Fear The Anchor", up 26-9 in its fourth week. The unlikely collaboration between the Death From Above 1979-inspired dance-punk band and the emerging pop/R&B singer is the first top 10 for each act. Also entering the top 10 is "Yellow Fever" from emo/jazz band Really From, up 11-10. Alice Merton leads six debuts this week at #28 with "Vertigo".
