Commentary
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
• H.E.R. enters at #26 with Hard Place. The song is the R&B singer's first chart hit on Shuffleplay, charting after her performance of it on the Grammy Awards. We have H.E.R. charting in 2019, nearly two decades after H.I.M. charted with the metal ballad Join Me, peaking at #34 in 2000.
• Shallow has been charting now for 21 weeks and each of those weeks has been inside the Top 3. That puts the song in first place for most weeks in the Top 3 from its debut. In 2007, Sarah McLachlan spent her first 20 weeks in the Top 3 with U Want Me 2 and last year, Brandi Carlile spent her first 18 weeks in the Top 3 with The Joke. (This week she is back for a 19th week with her return to #1).
Shallow's 21 weeks in the Top 3 is close to the record. There's a tie for most weeks between the first and second place record-holders for most weeks at #1. Nobody's Home by Avril Lavigne, which spent 17 weeks on top, ended with 22 weeks in the Top 3, as did Fortune by William Fitzsimmons, which holds the #1 longevity record with 19 weeks. If Shallow spends another week in the Top 3, it'll tie the record.
Here's a rundown of most weeks in the Top 3:
22 weeks: Avril Lavigne - Nobody's Home (2004-05)
22 weeks: William Fitzsimmons - Fortune (2014)
21+weeks: Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper - Shallow (2018-19)
20 weeks: Martina Sorbara - Bonnie & Clyde II (2002)
20 weeks: Sarah McLachlan - U Want Me 2 (2007)
20 weeks: Lady Gaga f/Beyoncé - Telephone (2010)
19 weeks: Jewel - Standing Still (2001-02)
19 weeks: KT Tunstall - Maybe It's A Good Thing (2015)
19+weeks: Brandi Carlile - The Joke (2017-19)
Most weeks without hitting #1: 14 weeks for Someone Like You by Adele.
• With Brandi Carlile's The Joke returning to #1, she creates a lot of distinctions.
-The Joke originally debuted at #1 in November 2017, spending 14 weeks there well into 2018. By returning to #1 this week, in February 2019, it becomes the first song ever to spend time at #1 in three calendar years.
-The Joke spends its total 15th week at #1, putting it in a tie for third place with Lady Gaga and Beyoncé's Telephone and KT Tunstall's Maybe It's A Good Thing. They sit behind Nobody's Home (17 weeks) and Fortune (19 weeks).
-It's jump to #1 from #80 puts it in a tie for the biggest rise to #1. Back in 2009, Owl City moved from 80-1 with Fireflies. Since The Joke already spent time at #1, this gives it the sole record for having the biggest jump for a returning #1.
-The Joke has now been charting for 56 weeks. With its move to #1, it becomes the longest running song ever to occupy the #1 position.
-The Joke's return to #1 gives Brandi her 35th week at #1 in total, tying her with Alanis Morissette for 5th place among artists with the most time spent at #1. Ahead of her, Avril Lavigne has 43 weeks, KT Tunstall has 46, Chantal Kreviazuk has 66 and Lady Gaga leads with 90.
