It's hard to believe it's May right now, but the grass is getting nice and green and it's been very wet outside... so the sun can't be far off.
The songs on this week's chart are percolating right along, as five songs tumble off to make way for some of the tunes that I'll be listening to through to the early part of summer.
"Eleanor" by Low Millions has taken its sweet time, but it's grown on me big time, and knocks Howie Day's "Collide" out of #1. But there's no true successor in mind, so the song could hold - or maybe "Collide" can do the rare feat of returning to #1! Songs by Rob Thomas, Lifehouse, and New Order inch along in the Top 5 - but have they peaked? And there go songs by The Caesars and Daniel Bedingfield landing in the Top 10 to make things interesting...
Last week's new tunes all move up splendidly, with Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Phunk With My Heart" taking honours for fastest riser.
Here are those 5 new songs I was talking about...
NEW TO THE CHART:
COUNTING HEADLIGHTS - Liam Titcomb
Like the first single from this 18 year old Canuck's debut "Sad Eyes", "Counting Headlights" is a terrific little story song that sounds great on the radio. Underneath it has a fresh enthusiasm that takes a few listens to recognize.
THE GEEKS GET THE GIRLS - American Hi-Fi
It's hard not to dislike this feel-good song, which could do quite well in the summer months. And maybe American Hi-Fi (who are touring with Bowling For Soup) may not be a one hit wonder after all. I love their 2001 hit "Flavor Of The Weak", which got to #1 on this chart!
HOLLABACK GIRL - Gwen Stefani
This song is very 80's - Blondie meets Cyndi Lauper, but with more street cred. And what's it about? Who cares... a fun tune that most likely will have a quick burnout, but enjoy while it lasts.
SUMMER BREEZE - Jason Mraz
A second track on this chart from the "Everwood" TV soundtrack, Mr. A-Z himself may have well been born in the 60's, as he gives it that "summer of love" kind of feel with his interpretation, even though the Seals & Crofts original came out in 1972. Another great vocal - put it in a mix with some other jazzy sounding tunes.
SUNSHINE - Hipjoint f/ Anders Johansson
From this B.C. production crew, featuring a Swedish vocalist who I believe was on their equivalent of "American Idol", comes this lovely ballad, which sounds quite nice alongside (but is better than) Backstreet Boys' "Incomplete". It's a download track only at this point as far as I can tell.
