With charts it's all about the #1 hit. Most of us have done countdowns of the biggest #1s, or our favourite #1s, or songs we wish had hit #1 or didn't hit #1. But what about the runner-up? The second best? The #2 hit?
I was curious after seeing Billboard's biggest #2 hits of all time and wanted to do one for myself. The result is a collection of songs from the last 20 years that are pretty much as memorable as the songs that blocked them from the top. These are the Top 50 #2 hits of all time on my chart (1998-present)
Some stats: - 165 songs peaked at #2 without every reaching #1 - 32 of those were an artist's debut single - On average, a song that peaks at #2 will spent 2.4 weeks there - The record for longest peak at #2 is 8 weeks - 34% of the songs that peaked at #2 spent a single week there - On average, songs that peak at #2 spend a full 6 months on the chart - 9.5 of those in the Top 10 - 6 songs debuted at #2 and peaked there (none of them made the Top 50) - David Usher has the most songs to peak at #2 (with 5) - 3 of the 4 least successful (fewer cumulative points) are songs from the last year
Here's the Top 50!

My longest running #2, with 10 weeks, is "Feel Good Inc." by Gorillaz. During each of its 10 weeks at #2, it was blocked from #1 by my longest-running #1 of all-time, "Don't Cha" by the Pussycat Dolls (16 weeks).
Interestingly, "DARE", the follow up to "Feel Good Inc." replaced "Don't Cha" at #1.

Some stats for my lists of No. 2 peaks: * 268 songs to date have peaked in the runner-up spot (Bad Suns' "This Was a Home Once," currently at No. 2, could become No. 269). * Two artists -- Tim McGraw and Babyface -- appear on five No. 2 songs each. McGraw has one duet with Ne-Yo ("Only Human") and four on his own ("Felt Good on My Lips," "Humble and Kind," "Better Than I Used to Be" and "How I'll Always Be"); Babyface appears in two duets with Toni Braxton ("Hurt You," "Heart Attack,") one on his own ("Every Time I Close My Eyes"), one with Jon. B ("Someone to Love") and one as lead singer of The Deele ("Two Occasions"). * Two titles -- "Drive" and "Just Another Day" -- have had two different songs peak at No. 2. R.E.M. and Incubus each hit with the former, while Jon Secada and John Mellencamp hit with the latter.
