Stability continues to be the theme at the top end of the chart. There's stuff bubbling up, but at the very top it's still Samsaruh for a 5th week, and in fact she and Jessie Ware have had an embargo on the top 2 for the last 7 weeks, as "Midnight" retains #2. Wolf Alice continue to sit at #3 with "Don't Delete The Kisses", and Ecca Vandal maintains #4 with "Broke Days, Party Nights". Moving on up is Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton's "Planets", hitting the top 5 for the first time. The top 10 also welcomes two newcomers, though from veteran artists in that perspective. It helps that I've recently played the first episode of Life Is Strange: Before The Storm, which though it does not feature the song in question (to my knowledge), it has helped me resonate further with Chloe's inner monologue, which I imagine inspired "Burn It Down" which climbs up 7 places to #6, Daughter's 2nd top 10 hit and now their highest charter. Also with a perfect record of top 10 hits, Sløtface get their 3rd with "Pitted" up a spot to #10.
NEW ENTRIES
It's hella busy this week with 6 new arrivals to get through. The first of which is a song which just narrowly missed the chart last week, with St. Vincent's 2nd single released this year, "Los Ageless", which if nothing else is a reminder that "Stylo"'s bassline was ahead of its time. Nonetheless it instantly becomes her biggest charter as it enters at #14, one spot above "Digital Witness"'s 2014 peak. This is her 3rd entry to date.
Now to welcome an artist that has been unseen for quite a while, though understandably as they hadn't released a single song since their tenure in the chart in 2015. So Makthaverskan's "Witness" which hit #4 back then finally has a follow up single by way of the track "In My Dreams" which was actually released a month ago but I didn't realise that until recently. It's in at #19 this week.
Speaking of songs I have been slow to discover, DeJ Loaf released "No Fear" back in June but I only discovered it this week because it just snuck onto the Hot 100 and it's pretty much a jam. You may know her best for her single "Try Me" or her subsequent shout out on "Nasty Freestyle", though probably not because that wasn't in the first 6 seconds of the song. Nonetheless, at #27 it's her first time on the chart.
Now the reason I discovered that new Makthaverskan single is because they released another single much more recently which pointed it out. That other new single also finds a place in this week, with "Eden" coming in at #31 and giving Makthaverskan their 3rd entry to date.
Now a band I've needed much less time to wait on, and they have in fact been very busy this year. Gang Of Youths go from strength to strength as they score their 4th entry from their latest album, and 5th overall, as "Say Yes To Life" climbs up in at #35.
Lastly sneaking through is another bottom 40 climber by way of Jess Locke's "Universe", doing so at the very close spot of #40. It's the first time in the chart for the Australian troubadour.
