As 2015 draws to a close, I've been thinking a lot about 2010 lately. That year was the start of the current decade; directly between 2005 and this year.
2010 in hit music was largely defined by huge pop stars having huge hits...Katy Perry with "California Gurls" and "Teenage Dream," Lady GaGa and Beyonce with "Telephone," Rihanna with "Only Girl" and "Rude Boy," Ke$ha making a splash with "Tik Tok" and "Your Love Is My Drug," etc. It was a very pop-centric time for music. Gone were the hard rock crossover artists of previous years like Nickelback and 3 Doors Down, and not yet present were the indie rock crossovers of the future. The urban music that had dominated most of the '00s was severely wounded, if not dead, and the urban production styles of today were nowhere to be found. That being said, I find 2010 dance-pop still had a fair amount of R&B or rap influence, unlike the 2011-12 stuff which was truly pure dance.
Pretty much anything from 2010 could be a hit now IMO, even if the super-poppy production of something like "California Gurls" is considered passe once again. I can't say the same for those songs being hits in 2005... Sure, songs like "Airplanes" or "Nothin' On You" or "According To You" may have worked, but most songs would have been extremely out of place in a year dominated by urban music and female pop-rock.
Another reason I think 2010 is more similar to now than to 2005 is the names that were big then. Most of them were relatively new artists who weren't even around in 2005. And while a few may have fallen into obscurity, most remain relevant in some capacity to this very day. I also think the likes of Meghan Trainor and The Weekend would stand a better chance in 2010 than Mario or Ciara.
So what do you guys think? Was hit music in 2010 more like 2005 or 2015?
