As a treat for my 11 year old son, I took him to see soulDecision (with opener Billy Klippert) at the Revival club in Toronto last night.
I must say, SD did very well for what turned out to be a small audience (250-300) - hey, Kalan Porter was playing across town too! They livened up most of the new songs from their current CD Shady Satin Drug, as well as two songs from their previous 2000 CD, "Faded" and "Ooh It's Kinda Crazy". In their spare time, these guys must be into a lot of jazz and funk, because songs like "Ooh It's Kinda Crazy", "Faded" and "Hypnotize" were performed with extended jams that stretched out the band's set to a little over an hour. Trevor Guthrie is a consummate front man who played to the audience and picked on both audience and band members alike. And, as the band did 5 years ago, they definitely play for the girls!
So while the concert was very enjoyable, I must compliment the Revival club to help make a good evening even better. The club has a small upstairs loft, and since the concert was all ages, the 20-25 who were under drinking age were relegated upstairs. The view of the band was good, but it could have been a bad thing if there were more people (for one, my son wouldn't have been able to see). So one of the concert coordinators at the club felt bad that we were so far away from the band, and arranged 1) for Trevor to come up and meet us after the show, and 2) for the kids to 'sneak' downstairs near the end for a front row view if they wanted. And this was my first concert in a smoke free club environment too... pretty neat huh?
While I would have liked to have talked with Trevor a bit longer, a throng of girls followed him upstairs, but he took a few minutes to speak with me and Ryan. Seems like a genuinely nice guy, taller and thinner in person than I thought, didn't even know the show was all ages and was glad we stuck around till the end. And so with a friendly pat on my back from him on my way out, I think it will be a fairly memorable night for me and Ryan for the next while!
