#1* -- 1 1 The Heist - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Rapper Macklemore has the first #1 album of the year with The Heist. The real surprise comes in at #2 though. It's the first appearance for Jagged Little Pill inside the Top 10 since it was #1 in the 90s. While I don't have official records for my album chart beyond whatever was #1 any time before late 1999, JLP did spend double-digit weeks on top of this chart (I believe it was 16?). It's resurgence this week is due to the release of the vinyl version of the album that I got for Xmas . Since I lifted the rule of allowing older albums to chart on the regular album chart, JLP has been and will likely continue to be a regular here, especially now that it comes in vinyl form.
Another surprise and first in well over a decade on the album chart is present twice below the Top 10. The appearance of the first cassette-album to make my album chart since the late 90s. The last two times a cassette-based album would have charted would have been with the Dixie Chicks' Wide Open Spaces and the original version of Come On Over by Shania Twain. Before that, cassette albums were regular including one of the longest running #1 albums ever, Falling Into You by Celine Dion.
This week, two albums by longtime-defunct Canadian indie band the Saddletramps (featuring Sarah Harmer in a Cowboy Junkies-meets-Roxette late 80s/early 90s band). Yardsale is new at #17 while their self-titled cassette comes in at #39.
