Commentary

- The first and most important thing to discuss on this week's charts is the album chart. Not a lot is noticeable looking at just the Top 10 but below there is a lot of action. Back in 2009, after many months of feeling bad for not giving any attention to classic albums that I occasionally dug up and listened to, I introduced a Catalogue Albums chart that allowed any albums that had been released more than 100 weeks ago. An album was eligible for this Top 10 Catalogue Albums chart once it fell off (naturally) the Top 50 currents chart. So albums could remain on that chart for as long as they did but if they dropped out of the Top 50 and were over 100 weeks since their first chart appearance, they were no longer eligible to return.
In more recent times, I've noticed that there were some cases in which really old albums would have had an impact on the overall album chart, in rare cases, perhaps would have been #1 had they been eligible. The weeks following Amy Winehouse's death last July, Back To Black would have been an easy overall #1 for a few weeks but it wasn't eligible because I had had the CD since 2007. So instead it held #1 on the Catalogue Albums chart for about five months. Back in February, Celebration by Madonna would also likely have spent an additional week at #1 after buying the 4-LP version of the album. Instead, #1 on the Catalogue chart. Both titles appear on this week's Top 50 Albums chart (#48 and #41 respectively).
What does this all mean? Old albums may now impact the album chart, like they do on the Billboard 200 chart. This week's highest charting former-catalogue album is at #12, So Jealous by Tegan and Sara which experienced a temporary resurgence (following a play-through of the album this past week). It'll likely tumble a lot next week but I expect to make room for a lot of similar jumps and falls for older albums to better represent my listening habits and musical enjoyment on a week-to-week basis. - Bruce Springsteen has his biggest week yet on The Max charts. Prior to 2012, Bruce's best chart posting of his four previous hits on The Max 100 was #30 for The Rising. This week's chart alone boasts four charting tracks from Bruce, doubling his overall total to 8. All come from his new album Wrecking Ball, which also moves to #2 on the album chart this week following listening interest and my review of the record: www.themaxonline.net/2012/03/18/music-review-wrecking-ball/
- The Decemberists earn their third #1 on the album chart following last year's The King Is Dead and 2007's The Crane Wife. It's also the 8th Live album to hit #1 in the chart's history and first since Tegan and Sara ended 2011 at #1 with Get Along. Also interesting is that of those eight, four of those have been double-discs. Along with the double Decemberists' concert discs, the first Lilith Fair collection (1998), the Dixie Chicks' Top of the World (hit #1 in 2007) and Tegan and Sara's Get Along came as a CD/DVD package (2011).
- Speaking again of Tegan and Sara, they reach a milestone this week as their album This Business Of Art receives a 4x Platinum certification. This is their third record to get to this point. While there are many acts that have sent two albums to 4x Platinum status (or more), the only other artist to have more than that aside from Tegan and Sara is Chantal Kreviazuk, and she has had four. This further indicates that T&S are a major albums-artist for me as it's their third record to reach 400+ plays as indicated by iTunes.
