21 GOES FOR 21: After remaining at #1 on today’s HITS’ Album sales chart, XL/Columbia recording artist Adele’s 21 will have its best sales week yet next Tuesday (2/21), the one-year anniversary of the album's release. Early indicators suggest the six-time Grammy winner, in her 52nd week on the chart, will blow past the 399k she achieved during Christmas week 2011. This will also be her 21st week at #1, setting a new record for the Soundscan era and tying MC Hammer's Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em, which logged a pre-Soundscan tally of 21 weeks. Next up are the soundtracks for Purple Rain and Saturday Night Fever, each of which held the #1 spot for 24 weeks in 1984-85 and 1978, respectively. Meanwhile, the British tabloids claim the U.K. songbird wants to take a five-year break from her career to spend more time with her Grammy companion, beau Simon Konecki. (2/14p) For those of you counting at home, that means Adele will pass seven million in sales in one year in the United States alone. LONG LIVE GODELE. We won't forget you, dear.

550-600K. CONSERVATIVELY.
Cue Jessica's username.
ADELE, WHITNEY HEAT UP: It’s the perfect storm for six-time Grammy winner Adele’s XL/Columbia album 21, as the release explodes at retail, marking a year since its release last Feb. Judging by how sales settle after the post-Grammy, post-Valentine’s Day rush, Adele should do, conservatively, between 550-600k this week—her best to date—making her #1 for the, coincidentally, 21st week, tying the pre-Soundscan mark set by MC Hammer’s Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em in 1990. And, ironically, bettering the 20 weeks logged at #1 by the late Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard soundtrack. Adele's previous album, 19, and live DVD are also catching fire in the marketplace. Meanwhile, retail is getting re-stocked with Houston's Greatest Hits album, making 100k in sales for the week a distinct possibility. In addition, VEVO reports 5.3 million views on combined Whitney videos in the 24 hours after her death, a 4,000% increase. (2/15p)

21 ON FIRE: Look for sales of Adele's multi Grammy-winning XL/Columbia album 21 to soar past 650k this week, and continue to gain momentum, thanks to the triple play of last Sunday's awards show, her 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper and Tuesday's Valentine's Day resulting in a perfect storm at retail. The album will spend its 21st week at #1, while total U.S. sales soar above 7.3 million with no end in sight. Will we have to wait five years for another one? Just call Ms. Atkins the Jeremy Lin of the record industry. (2/16p)

In what can only be called a remarkable week following her six Grammy wins, Adele is on track to sell 650k+ on next week's chart. This will mark 21's 21st week at #1 and set a new record for the most weeks on top during the SoundScan era. As of next week's chart, 21 will have sold 1.5m albums so far this year, giving it a sizable lead over any upcoming new releases for the best-selling album of 2012. Yes, we're calling it only seven weeks into the year. Here's how it looks post-Grammy/Valentine's Day:
Adele 21 (XL/Columbia) 650-680k Now 41 (Capitol/EMI) 90-100k 2012 Grammy Nominees (Universal Republic) 90-100k Whitney Houston Greatest Hits (RCA) 80-90k Adele 19 (XL/Columbia) 80-90k Van Halen (Interscope) 60-65k Paul McCartney (Hear Music) 60-65k Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 40-45k Coldplay (Capitol/EMI) 35-40k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 30-35k The Fray (Epic) 28-32k Bruno Mars (New Elektra) 28-32k Drake (YM/CM/Universal Republic) 28-32k The Civil Wars (sensibility) 28-32k Kelly Clarkson (19/RCA) 28-32k The Band Perry (Mercury Nashville) 28-32k Kidz Bop 21 (Razor & Tie) 25-28k Tony Bennett (Columbia) 25-28k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 22-27k Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Chop Shop/Atlantic) 24-27k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 24-27k
*Please note, the front loading this week as a result of the Grammys, Valentine's Day and the death of Whitney Houston may result in a greater than usual margin of error - if that's even possible.

ADELEMANIA: Never mind Linsanity, the record biz is basking in its own superstar in XL/ Columbia’s Adele, whose 21 album will spend its 21st week at #1 today with more than 700k in post-Grammy sales, sending it over 7 million, while our retail seers have already dubbed it the best-selling album of 2012. In addition, her first album, 19, is now #4, with another 85-90k in sales. Meanwhile, Whitney Houston’s Greatest Hits lands at #2 with 150-175k after last weekend’s funeral in Newark, giving Sony three of the Top 4.
