#30 Avril Lavigne "What The Hell" (584 points)
Avril Lavigne's latest album Goodbye Lullaby was not as successful as her previous albums, but it was again a good one. I thought "What The Hell" was her best lead single yet. People criticized it for being too immature for her age, which didn't make sense to me at all. Katy Perry is the same age and no one complained about "California Gurls". Madonna was approaching 50 when "Hung Up" was a global smash. So keep on making those immature pop songs Avril. They are excellent.
#29 Coldplay f/ Rihanna "Princess Of China" (588 points)
It's hard to believe I once despised Coldplay with every fiber of my being. But after a couple of great albums they have earned my respect and even some of my adoration. "Princess Of China", an unlikely collaboration with Rihanna, was a wonderful surprise. The "you really hurt me" outro is too epic for words.
#28 Owl City "Angels" (592 points)
One hit wonder Owl City is no longer on people's minds, but I gave his album All Things Bright and Beautiful a listen and was shocked how good it was. This song is one of the standouts.
#27 Devlin "London City" (603 points)
Remember Utada Hikaru's "Passion", which topped my year-end chart for two consecutive years (2006 and 2007), and was also top 10 in 2005 and 2008? Just when I thought 2010 would be its last (6th) appearance on my year-end chart (although last year it was in the unpublished #51-#100 section), I found out a British rapper had used a sample of it in his song "London City". I listened to it and was instantly smitten. The sample is used to perfection, and it reminds me of how well Dido's "Thank You" sounded in Eminem's "Stan". So "Passion" lives on.
#26 Lady Antebellum "We Owned The Night" (604 points)
I don't really consider myself a fan of Lady Antebellum, and I've never listened to their albums in full, but maybe that should change. They keep releasing singles I love. Last year it was "American Honey", and this year it was "We Owned The Night". An excellent song with a non-standard structure. I was pleasantly surprised that this too became a hit for them.
#25 Alan "Hu Huan / Echoes" (618 points)
This year I really got into Tibetan singer Alan Dawa Dolma, after listening to her compilation album. Although commercially it was a bad year for her, I really enjoyed her new single "Hu Huan" (The Call), and also its Japanese version "Echoes". Her voice is quite otherworldly.
#24 Adele "Someone Like You" (640 points)
There was no escaping Adele this year, and I don't think anyone minded. This is truly one of the great ballads of our time.
#23 Lady GaGa "Hair" (739 points)
I thought "Hair" was one of the most inspirational songs of the year. It's the only GaGa song that got to #1 on my chart, so that shows how much I love it. Her GMA performance of it in particular was stunning. It's a shame it was never released as a single.
#22 Within Temptation "Faster" (772 points)
2011 was also the year where all my favorite female-fronted bands went further into decline. Evanescence are just plain bad now, and Nightwish's new album couldn't hold my interest for long. Within Temptation are now the only ones who are still releasing quality music, but sadly The Unforgiving was their worst album yet. Didn't stop me from rocking out to lead single "Faster", though.
#21 Kelly Rowland f/ Lil Wayne "Motivation" (776 points)
Why wasn't this a global smash? It's so damn good. One of the few songs that truly qualify as sexy, the beat and Kelly's vocals are just mesmerizing. Even Lil Wayne is awesome on the track.
#20 Jonathan Boulet "You're A Animal" (792 points)
Listen here
I don't know anything about Jonathan Boulet, but his song "You're A Animal" totally slayed me when I came across it. The drums are just hammering way, exploding in an epic climax, while the lyrics are chanted military style. Love it.
#19 Britney Spears "Hold It Against Me" (802 points)
Watch here
I'm a little surprised this made it to the top 20, but that's probably cause it was released so early in the year. The song has burned on me a little, but I do remember how much I loved it back then. I thought Femme Fatale was a little disappointing in general, but it was still good.
#18 Lifehouse "It Is What It Is" (819 points)
Listen here
This was my #2 song of 2010, but had enough life this year to make it all the way to #18. Truly a phenomenal song, I was so shocked and disappointed that it was never released as a single. It could've been the global smash that they've been lacking.
#17 Lady GaGa "Judas" (865 points)
Watch here
Even though "Judas" was no "Bad Romance", it was still really damn good, so I was surprised that it underperformed. The verses in particular are heaven to my ears. I don't understand why it was this song that seemed to alienate a lot of people away from her. I thought it was the strongest single from the Born This Way era, an album that I really enjoyed.
#16 Perfume "Laser Beam" (872 points)
Watch here
Japanese electropop trio Perfume released their best single yet, "Laser Beam". I was instantly smitten with the song, it's just so cute and catchy. One of the best J-Pop singles of the year.
#15 Frankmusik f/ Far East Movement "Do It In The AM" (952 points)
Watch here
This awesome, catchy song pretty much defined my summer. So good! When I first heard it, I was shocked that it wasn't really charting anywhere or doing anything. It sounded so much like a global smash. Yet nothing ever happened with it. Sad. The album was pretty good too.
#14 Rihanna "We Found Love" (956 points)
Watch here
Rihanna's best lead single, I was instantly in love with this incredible song. Rihanna's voice has never sounded more angelic, and the beat is a monster. I love that it became such a huge success for her. Well deserved.
#13 Lecca "Mata Itsuka" (1100 points)
Watch here
Amazing reggae kind of J-Pop song. They call Lecca the Japanese Shakira because of the sound of her voice, but I think she has a really distinct sound and style.
#12 Lady GaGa "Electric Chapel" (1101 points)
Listen here
The best song on Born This Way, it's so beautiful and captivating. It's the "So Happy I Could Die" of the album. Love the relaxed beat and Gaga's silky vocals.
#11 Chihiro Onitsuka "An Fhideag Airgid" (1132 points)
Listen here
Who knew Chihiro could cover an old Scottish-Gaelic song, and cover it so well? One of the most haunting and beautiful songs of the year, the repetitive "hi-ri-hu" send chills down my spine.
#10 Utada Hikaru "Show Me Love (Not A Dream)" (1212 points)
Listen here
So we're now a year into Utada Hikaru's hiatus and it's not getting any easier. Knowing that your fave is not working on anything, there's nothing on the horizon... it's truly depressing. At least she left us with two incredible songs, the first of which appears here at #10. It was #16 on my year-end countdown last year. A great rock song, its quality is truly timeless.
#9 Tiziano Ferro "Per Dirti Ciao!" (1221 points)
Listen here
I could've probably put his whole album in my top 10 of the year, but I had to make it somewhat interesting, so only three songs made the cut. "Per Dirti Ciao!" (To Tell You Goodbye) is probably the best funeral song that I've ever heard. I love that on one hand it's written like an epic love song, and on the other hand it's incredibly sad and morbid. He's not just saying goodbye to this person, he's saying "I'm gonna sit here, I will let life pass me by until I finally see you again, at which point I too will be dead." I really hope this becomes a single.
#8 Utada Hikaru "Goodbye Happiness" (1315 points)
Watch here
And so we also get Utada's other song out of the way. She is such a talented, gifted, amazing singer, songwriter and producer. Her silence pains me. I need her back. Let's all hope that her hiatus won't last much longer. "Goodbye Happiness" was #5 last year.
#7 Jennifer Lopez "On The Floor" (1443 points)
Watch here
One of my all time favorite songs is Kaoma's "Lambada", so I was ecstatic to hear the melody being used in Jennifer Lopez's comeback single. I was in love with the song immediately, and still am. But let it be known that this is the version WITHOUT Pitbull. He is a mess and does nothing but ruin songs. If I hadn't found this rapless version, "On The Floor" would've probably missed the top 10.
#6 Owl City "Galaxies" (1492 points)
Listen here
I am far from a religious person, but even the frequent calls to God could not deter me from loving this song. It's so epic and catchy from start to finish. Apparently he wrote this for the Challenger and its fallen crew. Definitely should've been a single.
#5 Tiziano Ferro "La Fine" (1543 points)
Listen here
When Tiziano announced he was doing a cover of a rap song, I was intrigued. He can do pretty much anything with his voice so I thought it could be good. And indeed, it's very, very good. I can also see why he loves the lyrics, they resonate with me as well.
there are so many things I'd like to do, but then I stay motionless
I look at life in photographs and another winter has already come
I never make a change about this, I always ruin everything
if I have let you all down, an apology won't serve to anything
#4 Alan "Kuon no Kawa" (1613 points)
Watch here
This is actually an older song from 2009, but I fell in love with it this year, so here it is. I think Alan sounds absolutely spectacular on this song and the scenes from the movie Red Cliff make the whole video even more epic. The melody is so beautiful and enchanting, and the climax of the song so rewarding. One of the best J-Pop songs of all time.
#3 Adele "Set Fire To The Rain" (1624 points)
Listen here
Is there anyone who didn't fall in love with this song instantly? The lyrics, the vocals, the production! Even a year later this song is still as fresh and epic as ever. Adele has soared to mindblowing heights with her album 21, which has already sold over 15 million copies worldwide. I don't think she'll be like Dido or Norah Jones. She is here to stay, for decades to come.
#2 Darren Hayes "Black Out The Sun" (1923 points)
Watch here
While I was quite disappointed with Darren's new album Secret Codes and Battleships, which didn't come close to his masterpieces The Tension and the Spark and This Delicate Thing We've Made, there was one song on it that did bring me back to those glory days. "Black Out The Sun" is the perfect combination of depressing lyrics, dark electronic music and Darren's emotional singing voice. I was obsessed with the song for months. Truly one of the best of 2011.
'Cause there's nobody else who could hurt like you hurt me
I don't want to be lonely
And there's no other way
There's no joy, there's no meaning
Just this hollowed out feeling
Now all the love's gone
And nothing grows here
And I just feel wrong
So black out the sun
And all that we shared will slowly disappear
There's a hole where my soul used to grow
So just black out the sun
#1 Tiziano Ferro "La Differenza Tra Me E Te" (9269 points)
Watch here
I won't waste too many words on this song. My favorite song of all time. I'll never get tired of it. Perfect from the first second to the last. Everything music should be. Everything music can ever be. I live for songs as incredible as these. Thank you Tiziano for making them.
And so those were my favorite songs of the year. I realize the top 10 was probably the least interesting to outsiders, but oh well. Have a good 2012 everyone!
