There is some stiff competition, but this week is possibly the most shocking number one of the year. Sure, it's only a one place rise, and Muse were already a former number one, but to see Brandon Flowers dethroned after only two weeks is something I wouldn't have considered possible. Yet Muse almost did it last week, and this week they succeed, scoring a second total week on top with 'Neutron Star Collision.' Brandon falls back to two with 'Crossfire' but let's not beat around the bush, he WILL get back to the top. Possibly not next week, Muse are very strong, but Brandon won't stay off the top for too long.
The Gaslight Anthem shoot up to three with 'American Slang' racing eleven places. This is the biggest jump of the week, matched also by Angus & Julia Stone who rise to 25, and Thirsty Merc who jump to 32. Other significant gains come from Lifehouse and Adam Lambert, each rising five places, and Enrique Iglesias, who jumps up eight.
There are three debuts and a whopping four re-entries to the chart this week. And the news is really in the re-entries, with three of them outdoing the debuts, and all are reasonably old songs now. Owl City re-enter at 19 with 'Vanilla Twilight,' which peaked at ten earlier this year. Short Stack return and peak at 31 with 'Sweet December' which left the chart in January, and not far behind at 33 are the Arctic Monkeys with 'Cornerstone.' Civil Twilight are the final returners, at 43 with 'Letters From The Sky.' These songs return due to some reliving of the hits of the first half of the year, they stood out as songs that were denied the chart runs they deserved, and songs I was not yet sick of. They may not stay too long in this run, however they deserved to return.
Debuting this week are the Scissor Sisters at 38 with 'Fire With Fire,' Michael Paynter at 39 with 'Love The Fall,' and The Black Keys at 50 with 'Tighten Up.'
It's interesting to note that with the departures this week of both Sam Clark and the Temper Trap, the longest running song in the chart is only 17 weeks. Not too long back there were six songs that had been charting for over half a year, now the longest is only four months. The chart has become much more competitive. It'll be interesting to see whether this keeps up or whether there will be some more long runs soon.
