#10 RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE - Bulls On Parade
Album: Evil Empire
Year: 1996
"Bulls on Parade" addresses the issue of the American military-industrial complex, a situation in which industry (the arms industry, primarily) urges government to take military action, with the intent of obtaining military contracts, and to thereby increase its revenue.
#9 GRINSPOON - Lost Control
Album: New Detention
Year: 2002
Awesome heavier rock sound from the Grinners there best meterial since the debut LP "Guide To Better Living".
It was the official theme song for Afl Live 2004.
#8 MUSE - Time Is Running Out
Album: Absolution
Year: 2003
The single proved to be the band's breakthrough hit on alternative rock radio in the United States - hitting #9 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. It was also the band's first Top 10 hit in the UK, their previous best being #11 attained by "Plug In Baby".
Matthew Bellamy's vocal as always is flawless on the LP version but is by far my fave Muse clip and live track.
#7 LIMP BIZKIT - Take A Look Around
Album: Chocolate Starfish & The Hotdog Flavoured Water
Year: 2000
The song was also featured on the soundtrack of the movie Mission: Impossible II. It was chosen as the theme song for the movie over Metallica's "I Disappear", which appears alongside it on the film's soundtrack.
Probly one of the best bass riffs of all time in my opinion.
#6 NINE INCH NAILS - The Perfect Drug
Album: Lost Highway Soundtrack/JJJ HOTTEST 100 VOLUME 5
Year: 1997
Despite being a single, "The Perfect Drug" has never been performed live. On the official NIN website, "Sara" asked whether this is because "the drum solo would make Jerome's arms fall off." Then-drummer Jerome Dillon replied that they "never rule out the possibility of playing any of the songs live."
The song has never been performed live! I recomend checking out the video aswell, totally awesome!
#5 POWDERFINGER - My Kind Of Scene
Album: Odyssey Number Five
Year: 2000
"My Kind of Scene" (also marketed as "My Kinda Scene", "Not My Kinda Scene" and "It's Not My Kinda Scene") is a song by Australian rock band Powderfinger. the song was initially written for their fourth studio album Odyssey Number Five however the band was requested to contribute a song to the soundtrack for the 2000 film Mission: Impossible 2. The band submitted three songs: "Whatever Makes You Happy", "Up & Down & Back Again" and "My Kind of Scene". With these submissions, Paramount pictures decided to use "My Kind of Scene" however decided to release the song as a promotional song for the film, and so changed the title to "My Kinda Scene" in fitting with the other promotional single for the film, Limp Bizkit's "Take a Look Around".
The music video for "My Kind of Scene" features singer Bernard Fanning driving an old Holden Commodore along a country road with a complacent look on his face, in keeping with the lyrics of the song. As he drives, he lets go of the steering wheel after a while and eventually, the car crashes. The scene is to typify letting go of control and just letting things happen. Beautiful Video
#4 THE STROKES - You Only Live Once
Album: First Impressions Of Earth
Year: 2006
The video for the single was directed by Samuel Bayer, who had previously helmed the "Heart in a Cage" video, and features the band performing the song in an enclosed room while sewage pours from the walls and fills the room.
It was listed at #16 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2006.
When the song was released as a single, The Strokes launched Operation YOLO (You Only Live Once), prompting all of their fans to call and request the single on radio stations. Their goal was to try to get out the word of the new single as fast as possible.
The song's main bassline is similar to that of "I Want to Break Free" by Queen.
#3 THE VERVE - The Drugs Don't Work
Album: Urban Hymms
Year: 1997
Lead singer Richard Ashcroft wrote the song in early 1995. He briefly mentioned it in an interview at the time, relating it to his drug usage: "There's a new track I've just written [...] It goes 'the drugs don't work, they just make me worse, and I know I'll see your face again'. That's how I'm feeling at the moment. They make me worse, man. But I still take 'em. Out of boredom and frustration you turn to something else to escape."
The exact meaning of the song is unclear, but it is generally believed that composer Richard Ashcroft wrote the song in response to the death of his father, and is also thought to be influenced by his relationship with his wife. Ashcroft said in an interview, "to me, it's a lovesong".
To me this is a song the effects me in many ways as my childhood best friend was buried to this song, he died of a drug overdose in 2003
#2 THE CRANBERRIES - Zombie
Album: No Need To Argue
Year: 1994
Zombie" is a protest song by the Irish band The Cranberries from the 1994 album No Need to Argue. The song, which laments The Troubles in Northern Ireland, was written by Dolores O'Riordan, singer of the band.
"Zombie" was recorded at the Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin in 1994. It was written during the Cranberries' English Tour in 1993, in memory of two boys, Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, who were killed in an IRA bombing in Warrington.
This was also the first ever CD single I bought on a Thursday night after seeing the movie "Forrest Gump" at Hoyts cinema's in Hurstville, Sydney.
#1 THE BEATLES - Hey Jude
Album: Single Release
Year: 1968
In 1968, John Lennon and his wife Cynthia Lennon separated due to his affair with Yoko Ono. Soon afterwards, Paul McCartney drove out to visit Cynthia and Julian, her son with Lennon. "We'd been very good friends for millions of years and I thought it was a bit much for them suddenly to be personae non gratae and out of my life," McCartney said. Cynthia Lennon recalled, "I was truly surprised when, one afternoon, Paul arrived on his own. I was touched by his obvious concern for our welfare.... On the journey down he composed 'Hey Jude' in the car. I will never forget Paul's gesture of care and concern in coming to see us."
The song's original title was "Hey Jules".
Doesn't matter what countdown it is if this is allowed to be used it'll be always #1, A PURE MASTERPIECE which spent 11 Weeks at #1 in Australia.
