It's a classic problem. How do you make sure kids get to school on time?
One Arizona community says the answer is simple: you charge parents each time a student is late or skips school.
Weary of poor grades and low graduation rates, Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation families are being fined if their kids skip school or arrive long after the bell rings.
The tribal council is fining parents $100 a day the first time a child is significantly late or absent. That fine goes up to a maximum of $300 a day for repeat offenders.
That means parents of chronically late or absent students could be charged thousands of dollars.
Officials from the tribe said the idea is part of a larger education initiative which includes homework help and other support.
And they added, the money goes to the tribe's general fund.

While it is a parent's responsibility to ensure that their children grow up to be the best possible adult, fining the parents for their child's decisions is insane. It would essentially throw discipline out the window, because if a child was pissed at their parent for something they did, they could just skip school as a "f*ck you"

No, they shouldn't. It's the kid's responsibility to attend class.

No, they shouldn't. It's the kid's responsibility to attend class. When you're a minor, you are under the care of your parents. That means, legally, parents are mainly liable for their child's actions. Now, there are some "technicalities" on this and it varies from state to state, but being negligent to your child's behavior is nearly in all states the fault of the parent. So, this tribe is using that to their advantage, unfortunately. I think there should be a fine imposed for truancy or excessive tardiness. I do agree that $100 a day is outrageous though. I don't see why the minors could not be ticketed though. I mean, they can receive speeding tickets and such, why not a fine for this? If I were the parents, I would make sure my kid paid for it though.
