NOTES:
Since this chart began in 1978, no act has had the number one song of the year more than once. Mariah Carey continues this trend.
Mariah Carey is the third act to have the #2 song of the year and later capture top honors.
Mariah Carey (1990, #2) "Vision Of Love"
Mariah Carey (2005, #1) "We Belong Together"
Tim McGraw (1994, #2) "Don't Take The Girl"
Tim McGraw (1997, #1) "It's Your Love"
Peter Cetera (1986, #2) "The Next Time I Fall"

"We Belong Together" earned 663 points, the lowest total for the #1 song of the year since 1988 when Brenda Russell also scored 663 points with "Piano In The Dark".
"We Belong Together" beat Gary Allan by 2 points, the closest margin since 2003 when Matchbox Twenty beat Fleetwood Mac by 1 point.
Fido Flash Awards are given by total points earned during the calendar year in five categories, top song, top male act, female act, group and new act. Mariah Carey won top song and female act in 2005. She had previously won top new act in 1990 and top female act in 1993. Big & Rich, Jack Johnson and Geoff Byrd had never earned a Fido Flash Award before this year.
Elton John extended his streak to 28 consecutive years with at least one chart hit. Madonna and Whitney Houston have also charted every year since 1984, but Whitney Houston failed to do so in 2005, ending her streak at 21 years.
Pink also failed to chart, ending a four year streak with at least one number one hit (2001 thru 2004). Celine Dion also failed to make the top 40 for the first time since her debut in 1991, ending her streak at 14 years.
