Well, its been another year and its been a fun one! There has been some changes with this chart, with various name changes being one. Perhaps, the most important thing that happened this year with this chart, in chart history speaking, was that it actually got retired and resurrected with a new name and more of a multi format change. Now, this chart reflects more of my take on what's modern top 40(a true mix of modern rock, soul/hip hop, hot AC and real pop music....yes with Ms Spears and Mr Hilton!)
For the first time since 1994, the late Aaliyah is a no show at the top spot for the entire year(no songs went to number one). Her highest charting single comes in the form of a crossover with "Come Over" which finishes at number 99, based on the strength of longevity on the chart. "Come Over" was also last year's song of the year, a feat which Aaliyah had accomplished for 7 years, a record. This year also saw Aaliyah's 11 year streak of having at least one single on the chart end. I have only been making charts for 13 years, so Aaliyah basically had dominated it. But, even with Aaliyah gone, the chart has reincarnated to keep her records intact! Aaliyah remains the only artist to have every single go straight to number one(over 30 to boot), she has over six Urban Legends(songs to chart for a year), and she also holds the record for longest weeks at number one at 14 with "At Your Best You Are Love". Goodbye Urban Legend, hello to the Modern Top 40!
Well, Janet did not have such a great year, as she fails to have a year end top ten finish. If it weren't for the reincarnation of the chart, her streak of number ones would've ended too. Janet, along with Aaliyah are the only artists that had all of their singles go to number one. On a very small footnote, one of Janet's singles this year failed to get to number one........shhhhh! Don't tell anyone!
Incubus pulls in their second year end number one finish with the instant modern rock classic "Talk Shows On Mute". I loved this song to death and don't know why it didn't do well on anybody else's chart. Their first single ever "Pardon Me" also finished on top at the end of the year in 2000. Incubus are a definately my favourite artist as of right now and I'm totally looking forward to new music from them in 2005.
Modern rock dominated the chart with 9 singles in the top ten and many more singles underneath that. With some strong tracks by Franz Ferdinand, Linkin Park, The Killers, The Used, Jet, the Lostprophets etc this kept the genre fresh all year long!
Ms Spears get another top ten finish at the year end chart with "Toxic". This is her third one yet, besides "Baby, One More Time" and "I'm A Slave 4 U". She's not finished yet either, watch out for more of her.
Mr Hilton just missed the top ten, a few more weeks on the charts and he would've maybe had a chance. But, since this is a year-end chart, and with so much competition from the modern rock artists, that left little room for the new Hot AC/pop king! Maybe next year, as his album is full of hits! His contempories Ashless Simpson, Matt Nathanson, and Ryan Caberea follow close behind!
Usher gets three songs in the top 40, with "My Boo" and "Burn" in the top 20. He brings some soul/hip hop flavour to this chart along with Kanye West, Nas, Destiny's Child, Eminem, 50 Cent, Ciara, Twista, Alicia Keys, Petey Pablo, Christina Milian, Jay Z, Monica, Mobb Deep and other street/r and b artists that kept the Urban flavour alive!
Vancouver's Matt Good finishes off as the top Canadian at number 16, followed by The Stills. Sum 41, Thornley, Auf Der Maur, Gob, Avril Lavigne, 3 Days Grace, Billy Talent, Hot Hot Heat, Nelly Furtado, Finger Eleven, Bif Naked, Sam Roberts and the Tragically Hip also get some of their stuff on here as well!
Anyhow, go check out the chart!
