Happy new year from (gasp!) RAINY Southern California!
Personally, 2004 saw the end of the progressive alt-rock station 92.1, but mere weeks later came the debut of MTV2 in the San Diego area.
I also searched high and low for free MP3s to promote. Such labels as Barsuk, Nettwerk, Epitaph and Drive-Thru provided complete samples of their artists' work. Even Warner-owned Maverick Records bucked the major-label trend by offering freebies, which interestingly enough, included 2004's Dan 40 Number One Hit (see below).
I also was frustrated by the corporate media. Me being a nearly 20-year fan of R.E.M., I could not find a single free stream of the song "Leaving New York" in Real Audio or WM. I ventured into the P2P to build my playlist for the first time since December 2001. A hypocrite am I? You bet, but not as big as the big-time stars who disdain file-sharing, yet sit on loads of cash.
Oh, by the way, R.E.M.'s album Behind the Sun is their worst, and aptly titled too. They've stopped trying to connect with their audience, so they might as well be playing from space. Please, somebody, repossess their synthesizers.
The absense of recent new songs like "Blvd of Broken Dreams" by Green Day is me following a strict rule about which songs goes in what year. To be eligible for this year-end, a song must:
1) Peak in the year 2004, or
2) Logged its tenth week by the last chart of the year, or
3) Reached the top 5 by the last chart of the year.
Here's to rocking the M4BBC some more in 2005.
