Well, it's been decided! Whoot! The Top 100 of 2004 is ready to be posted! I'll be doing the first 10 today, and so on as we get closer to Christmas and New Years. #100-21 will be posted like a regular ol' chart, but #20-#1 will contain a write up! YAY! Now, Craig kinda used the same chart format that I had planned, so Craig, you're a freakin' genius, and by using a similar format, it's just a testament to how much of a freakin' genius you are. # | | ARTIST | TITLE | ALBUM | 100 | | RYAN MALCOLM | STAR OF ALL THE PLANETS | HOME | 99 | | BILLY TALENT | TRY HONESTY | BILLY TALENT | 98 | | JET | COLD HARD BITCH | GET BORN | 97 | | KEANE | SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW | HOPES & FEARS | 96 | | HOOBASTANK | DISAPPEAR | THE REASON | 95 | | TRAIN | ORDINARY | SPIDERMAN 2 SOUNDTRACK | 94 | | BRITNEY SPEARS featuring MADONNA | ME AGAINST THE MUSIC | IN THE ZONE | 93 | | LORETTA LYNN featuring JACK WHITE | PORTLAND, OREGON | VAN LEAR ROSE | 92 | | TWISTA featuring KANYE WEST & JAMIE FOXX | SLOW JAMZ | KAMIKAZE | 91 | | HOT HOT HEAT | TALK TO ME, DANCE WITH ME | MAKE UP THE BREAKDOWN | 90 | | LINKIN PARK & JAY-Z | NUMB/ENCORE | COLLISION COURSE | 89 | | LIMP BIZKIT | BEHIND BLUE EYES | RESULTS MAY VARY | 88 | | TURN OFF THE STARS | PLEASE | EVERYTHING IS OK | 87 | | THE LIBERTINES | CAN'T STAND ME NOW | THE LIBERTINES | 86 | | STORY OF THE YEAR | UNTIL THE DAY I DIE | PAGE AVENUE | 85 | | THE RASMUS | GUILTY | DEAD LETTERS | 84 | | KELLY CLARKSON | SINCE U BEEN GONE | BREAKAWAY | 83 | | GARY JULES | MAD WORLD | TRADING SNAKEOIL FOR WOLFTICKETS | 82 | | NORAH JONES | SUNRISE | FEELS LIKE HOME | 81 | | GRETCHEN WILSON | WHEN I THINK ABOUT CHEATIN' | HERE FOR THE PARTY | 80 | | PILATE | INTO YOUR HIDEOUT | CAUGHT BY THE WINDOW | 79 | | MYA | FALLEN | MOODRING | 78 | | DESTINY'S CHILD | LOSE MY BREATH | DESTINY FULFILLED | 77 | | GWEN STEFANI | WHAT YOU WAITING FOR? | LOVE. 20. The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called LoveThis song debuted on my chart late in 2003, so it's entire chart life wasn't this year. However, GLAM ROCK RETURNED! Nothing had sounded a corny and fun as this for years before, and nothing has sounded quite like it since. It's simply a fantastic rock track, helping The Darkness check in at #20 for the year-end countdown. 19. Default - Taking My Life AwaySurprisingly few Canadian acts made a huge dent on my chart this year, and Default falls into the category of one who did and one who didn't. "Taking My Life Away" was their only chart hit, but it was a big one. It was a hold over from 2003, hit #1 back in January/February, and comes in at #19 for the year 2004. 18. Vanessa Carlton - White HousesThe return of Vanessa Carlton this year was a fresh one. She has a much different sound than her contemporaries, with her voice and piano blending well. "White Houses" is no "A Thousand Miles" but it's good enough for #18. 17. Lostprophets - Last Train HomeI have to say, I was a lil' reluctant to even hear this song at first... I have no idea what it was. I'd never seen the band, heard of the band, anything. But this turned out to be one kick-ass rock track. I may have followed the formula of many records of its kind, but it was different and fun. 16. Gavin DeGraw - I Don't Want To BeGavin DeGraw's "I Don't Want To Be" is the first song in Dan's Top 20 history to actually have two strong chart runs. "I Don't Want To Be" first debuted back in March, and had a decent 8 week run, peaking at #6. Well, when the track was re-released, it had a second chart run and has just entered the Top 5. Look for Gavin to continue being a chart hig next year, too. 15. Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved2004 was a huge year for Maroon 5. Hell, it was their breakout year. They charted in 2003 with "Harder To Breathe," but this song, along with "This Love" sent them into superstardom. While more popular with a lot of people, "She Will Be Loved" finished the year 2004 at #15 on Dan's Top 100 of 2004. Look for more from these guys later on. 14. Switchfoot - Dare You To MoveThis was one of my favourite tracks 4 years ago when Switchfoot released their album "Learning To Breathe." It later showed up on the soundtrack to the movie 'A Walk To Remember,' and was finally redone and released as the second single from Switchfoot's latest album, 'The Beautiful Letdown.' This track continues to be one of my favourite from the guys, and you can watch for more of their stuff in 2005, for sure. 13. Yellowcard - Only OneYellowcard was another breakout act from the year 2004. They first appeared with the hit "Ocean Avenue," but skyrocketted, in my opinin, with the release of "Only One." Both the track and video are brilliant. The track spent several weeks at #1 on Dan's Top 20, which could be why they're #13 for the year 2004. 12. Ben Jelen - Come OnBen Jelen is underappreciated. That's all I have to say. When I first heard of the guy, he was described as the male version of Vanessa Carlton... he sits. He sings. He plays the piano. Good enough for me. He was a male pop singer who somehow broke through all the rock of the early summer and found a place at #1. Why this guy hasn't blown up, I don't know. 'Tis a shame. 11. Hoobastank - The ReasonI loved this song. I still love this song. And it was killed by overplay. By the end of the year, nobody cared much for this song. It was the new "Hanging By A Moment." But it wasn't. Hoobastank have had hits before this, and they've had hits after. Given, nothing as huge as this. It spent a couple weeks at #1 this year before I thought I had too much of it. But it's #11 for the year!

10. Tyler Hilton - When It ComesNow can I spot the talent, or what? I've been tootin' this guy's horn since May, and he's finally getting some attention. He debuted back in June, and had of peak of #2, however due to the fact that his song just wouldn't go away, he was able to collect enough points to start off the Top 10 at #10. YAY! 9. Muse - Time Is Running OutMy ex boyfriend introduced me to these guys. These guys are continuing British rock the way Radiohead were doing it in the mid 90s before they got all experimental. Another song with a #2 peak, Muse were able to stick around and JUST NOT DIE. The song had a very slow climb, and spent multiple weeks just shy of #1. But hey, it worked out well for 'em, didn't it? 8. Sarah McLachlan - StupidSarah McLachlan landed at #11 on the Year End Chart in 2003 with "Fallen," the first single from 'Afterglow.' At that time, I said that she's have to wait until 2004 for her #1. Well, the wait was worth it, as "Stupid" became a massive hit (at least in my mind). It spent several weeks at #1, and hooray to her!

7. Maroon 5 - This LoveI told you they'd show up again... Maroon 5 were the artist to knock Britney's "Toxic" out of #1, and that alone is an accomplishment. However, "This Love" went on to spend 3 weeks at #1, in the process becoming one of the biggest hits of 2004. 6. Nelly Furtado - TryNelly Furtado had kind of fallen from grace after "I'm Like A Bird" and "Turn Off The Lights." It seemed that nothing really measured up to those singles, and I have to agree. That was, until she released "Try," the most honest, beautiful ballad of the year. "Try" knocked "This Love" out of #1, and spent 3 weeks there also. It charted for a couple more weeks, though, so point wise, it ranked JUST ABOVE. Nelly Furtado has the #6 song of 2004.

5. Kelly Clarkson - BreakawayKelly Clarkson had two songs within the Top 10 for last year's countdown, but both missed the Top 10 ("Miss Independent" finished #6 and "Low" finished #10). However, this year she captures the #5 spot with "Breakaway." The track was featured on the soundtrack to 'The Princess Diaries 2,' and had AMAZING longevity. It climbed for months before doing any damage. It may have only spent a single week at #1, but just by hangin' around, it's #5 for the year. 4. Dashboard Confessional - VindicatedTwo soundtrack songs in a row as Dashboard lands at #4 for the year. This was THE soundtrack song of the year, and was everything that Train's "Ordinary" wasn't. This one spent a number of weeks at #2 before finally claiming #1 for a couple of weeks, and it completely deserved all the attention it got. Dashboard finished last year at #15 with the song "Hands Down," so a #4 ranking for "Vindicated" is quite an improvement.

3. Evanescence - My ImmortalThis track was just taking off when 2003 ended, but it did major damage in 2004. It spent two weeks at #1, and just hung around for the longest time. It's easily the most beautiful song of the year, with Amy Lee's soaring vocals, the rock pick-me-up at the end, and the absolutely amazing video. "My Immortal" finds it's place at #3 on the year end countdown. 2. Britney Spears - ToxicScrew "...Baby One More Time"!! Who needs "Oops!... I Did It Again"? 2004 was when Britney released her masterpiece. "Toxic" was just over 3 minutes of absolute dance bliss. Catchy, fun, and simple. Britney can go to bed happy now.

1. Ryan Cabrera - On The Way DownAnyone who didn't see this one coming doesn't follow my chart very well. Ryan set a new record after spending 10 weeks at #1, keeping next to everyone at #2. His album was abolutely amazing, and the song went on to do what Jason Mraz couldn't last year... allowed a solo male to capture #1 on the year end countdown.
