Gosh... I have to say, I'm not a fan of internet rumours as to who gets the boot, so I never saw this Dolly thing coming!
Welcome to another season of Survivor Strategy, written by me, Mr. Reality-TV-Is-My-Life Dan.
Lemme just start off by saying that I do NOT look at spoilers or anything, so don't gimme any of that crap in this thread. I do NOT wanna know. Keep it to yourself. Write in in a letter. Whatever. Just don't tell me. I'll be updating this thread every week with my thoughts and comments as to gameplay from the players.
Let's start off with the men, shall we?
First of all, this was quite possibly the most homoerotic reward challenge they've ever had on this show, 'cause for the most part, men don't go rubbing themselves against each other, especially not when wet. Women, well, that's another story, but men, no. Fact is, the men had no possible way of winning this challenge. Yes, Brady made it across the beam for the men, but that was where the line was going to be drawn. Three main reasons: 1) Men have a higher center of gravity than women, thus, it's harder for them to keep their balance on such an beam. 2) Men are, in theory, bulkier than women. 3) Men do NOT like man-on-man touching. Well, most men. John K. and John P. had a tender moment there, but that's about it.
However, the immunity challenge was tailor made for the men, especially when you have a former drill sargent calling the shots, as Lea did. Scout didn't stand a chance against this guy. The challenge was played hard, and the men finally won something. Good for them.
There was some tension around camp this week as Rory complained to no end about Twila's dance following her completion of the reward challenge, and for Lea, an ally, to notice this and discuss it, doesn't bode well for our lone African-American male.
Now, the women... Yikes. Quite the week they had, huh?
As I said before, the men stood no chance at the reward challenge, so it was a given that the women were going to take those blankets home.
At the immunity challenge, Scout was probably the best choice to call out directions. I mean, heck, you sure as hell don't wanna tie up the old woman and send her out to sea, and since they had to use her since they sat her out of the reward challenge, it worked out well that her position in the game didn't involve anything physical. However, like I said, this challenge was set up for the men. With the Sarge calling the shots for the men, poor Scout just didn't stand a chance.
Now, the women made an interesting choice in voting out Dolly, who, might I add, is the best damn looking sheep farmer I've ever seen.
Let's look at it this way - 9 women. 4 fall into the "older" category, 5 fall into the "younger" category, at least that's how the tribal dynamics were displayed. It would have been easy to pick off someone like Scout this early on... the younger women had a numerical advantage, plus reasoning, in the fact that in a way, she cost them the challenge. The older women had initially picked Eliza to be their boot choice because of her big mouth. Dolly, well, she kind of came in the middle of the two groups. She could have easily joined with the younger women and made it easy, but she played both sides, probably because it was her nature to do so.
I'm not saying it's a bad idea, no, not at all. Fact is, you have to become friends with these people, and if you do so through an alliance of some sorts, or even just pretend, you have to. Seven of these people will be deciding the fate of the winner. It's happened before: people hold grudges. Neleh could have easily been the winner of Survivor: Marquesas should she have said the right words at the end of the game. But saying the right words comes into play the whole game. However, Dolly, for some odd reason was pervcieved as too much of a threat for playing both sides.
Now, I need to vent here. Have these people never seen this show before? The beginning stages of the game are to feel your team out, attempt to find allies who will take you to the end game, and weed out the weaker parts of your team so that you don't have to go back to Tribal Council. However, two weeks in a row, the obvious boot has been spared due to someone being too much of a "threat." I'm sorry, but that's bullshit. "Threats" get picked off mid-game, when they've helped you get to that point, are no longer needed, and would harm your chances of winning should they get any further. I mean, look at the people who have been voted off first after the merge: Gretchen, Jeff Varner, Clarence, Rob Mariano, Shii Ann/Ken, Roger/Dave, Andrew... they're all physically strong players who got where they needed to, and were disposed of, whether it have been due to physical or mental threat.
Chris and Scout are lucky that age divides have saved them so far. However, hopefully these players will start thinking about what's best for the team for a little, instead of what's best for me. That part has yet to come.
Predictions:
Previews for next week's show allude to a double eviction, one man, and one woman.
At this point, the men should think about ditching Rory. Mentally, he's not in the game, and his attitude is bringing down his tribemates, also lowing team moral around camp.
The women, on the other hand, have a tricky decision. Ideally, it would be Scout, unless she really finds a way to redeem herself, but I think that one of the other woman may bite the bullet, with my money riding on Eliza. She turned her back on the younger women, and the older women may see this as an oppertunity to jump on something.
So, as I said, we'll say goodbye to Eliza and Rory next week.
Man-on-man action?
People falling over things and getting smacked in the head?
People getting tied up, blindfolded, and told to walk into the ocean?
Mark Burnett, you may have failed with All Stars, but you have been redeemed. Bravo!
Until next week...
