Anyone notice that within the last few years, major released albums are releasing second singles sooner and sooner? It used to be that a first single from a major release would explode onto the charts, peak after a few months and fall with rather large success and then a second single would be issued but lately you have the first single being released, peaking relatively fast (usually around the release of the album) with a second single being released then as well and the second single is the successful of the two. Recent examples of this include Christina and Avril and Gwen will prolly end up like that as well and U2's second song is already being released.

I've noticed that. I think it's due to short attention spans of the audiences...or *perceived* short attention spans. In addition to the situation you described, Mike, record labels release singles too early. For example, the new Mariah Carey album is scheduled to come out in February or March. Her new single will be hitting radio in December. Too early! If the song's popular at all, it'll probably peak in January and be dropping down the charts...or already off the charts by the time the album comes out. And there should NEVER be a situation where a second single is released before the album ever drops.
My remedy would be to release singles anywhere from 3 weeks to a month prior to the album hitting the stores. that way, the song will be approaching popularity right when the album comes out.
Just my two cents...

I never really followed how things were done before the last few years but some examples I do remember back in 1998 was the release of Jewel's and Alanis' new CDs. They were due November 17 and 3rd respectively and if I remember correctly, both first singles hit radio around the beginning to mid October. Chantal's 1999 album hit stores October 5th, I think, and the single hit radio the beginning of September. Yeah, 4 to 6 weeks is ample time!

So are you implying that record labels should wait a bit longer to release the follow-up singles, Mike?

What do you think? I'm trying to make discussion topics. I think what they do with first singles nowadays is basically get the word out that the artist has a new album out and then focus more on the success of the second single. So the second single serves the same purpose as first singles did 5 years ago, in a way. I don't have a problem with second singles coming out when they do except that with two songs high on the charts at once (potentially), it does create that whole "hogging the chart" factor that people accuse Eminem of doing. Third singles shouldn't even be a consideration by album release time though... as I just noticed people are doing with Gwen Stefani already.

But in Gwen's case, her first single is already starting to fall. It would make sense to release the 2nd single immediately.

I know. The same was the case with a lot of other recent CDs from the past like Christina Aguilera and Nelly and others. Part of my point was that it didn't happen often 5 years ago that the first single would begin falling as quick.

I guess it really depends on how big the first single is. I mean, did the Cardigans' "Lovefool" hang around for a long time before they could release their next single? I remember watching an interview they did with MuchMusic a few years back where they said that they were hoping for "Lovefool" to fall down the charts, so that they could release "Been It". As a result, I think "Been It" may have suffered in the US because of this. Who knows for sure? (Also, it wasn't the greatest follow-up to begin with).

Look at Destiny's Child... It's WAY too early! Lose my breath is beginning to have a lot of airplay here and they released Soldier...
