This rock quartet formed in the 80s at the University of South Carolina. And before you ask, here's how they got their name.... The band's lead singer, Darius Rucker, had two friends...one who wore thick glasses that made him look like an owl. And another friend had big, chubby cheeks. So, whenever he'd run into these two friends, he'd say to them, "Hey! It's hootie & the blowfish!" Therefore, the lead singer isn't Hootie and the other members are NOT The Blowfish. Sorry to disappoint.... At any rate, the group created a sensation - not to mention a legion of sound-alikes - in the mid 90s with their major label debut, "Cracked Rear View." A victim of their own massive popularity and overexposure. Their sophomore album - although released two years after "Cracked" - came out while radio singles from the first album were still running their course across the country. The public burned out on them quickly. Although they've stayed together and continued to release albums, none have come close to matching the popularity of "Cracked Rear View."

Yeah! My homeboys from University of South Carolina! My brother and I actually saw them perform at USC years before they "hit it big." Boy, did they ever have a fast, meteoric rise to the top ... only to come crashing down hard, didn't they? Over this past year I heard a remake they did of "Goodbye Girl," and it was so-so. Darius also put out a solo album, but I never heard anything from it. My favorite single from them definitely was the first big hit, "Hold My Hand."
