she released her material like "Honey" and "One Sweet Day"? i only because Keith brought up a good point in the play or trash topic and it got me to thinking. If thoses songs were released today, would they be hits?
i say, given current trends, probably nothing major. a few top 20 hits... top 10 if she would be lucky.

Since music is crap today, they wouldn't do so well

In my opinion, artists are successful because of the "musical climate" of the time they release their music in. Who's to say she'd even release those songs today if she recorded them now? Maybe she'd opt for something a little less "poppy."
It's tough to answer that question because we already know Mariah as a success in the 90s. I'd wager that she wouldn't be a success now. Larger-than-life ballads like "One Sweet Day" aren't really what the Pop chart is all about these days. You've either got to be doing teen rock, slut pop, or something hip-hop oriented to get much notice. Although "If I Ain't Got You" found a relatively high place to peak. Maybe "One Sweet Day" would still be a hit. As for "Honey," I think it would still be a hit. It kind of fits in on the Pop chart.

Depends on the factors. If Mariah was a new artist today and her first single was 'One Sweet Day' with fellow new artists Boyz II Men?

Assuming she didn't screw over her musical career with trite such as Glitter and Charmbracelet, I think she would've been big and remained relevant.

I mean, looking back, the timing for "One Sweet Day" couldn't have been better. Both Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey were at the peak of their careers and '95-'96 was the perfect time for an AC/Urban ballad such as this. The song was amazing, but yeah, a lot had to do with the fact that both were huge established artists who were high on the charts at the time. No wonder the song was a mult-format smash and sold millions. None of Mariah's songs from either the early '90s or the mid '90s would have been hits had they come out now. They fit the era in which they were released, (which is basically why they were released then, lol). If Mariah tries to adapt to the current radio scene, she'll sound ridiculous and bomb on the charts...if she releases old-school style stuff, it'll sound dated and she'll still bomb on the charts. The only choice she has now is to wait awhile...maybe things will change and she'll be able to get a hit again. Hell...if Cher could reach the top in 1999, I don't think we can rule Mariah out completely just yet.

I dunno. I'm usually not quick to rule out an artist's potential future successes but I personally don't think Mariah has a rat's chance of ever having a major solo hit again. Her only hope is being featured on other artists' songs (as with Busta Rhymes last year) or somehow incorporating a major artist into her own single in such a way that it doesn't make it seem like she's the lead artist on it. ...she depended too much on producer of the moment in her day and after it while, it stopped working.

i don't know what to really think here anymore, i mean Mariah really has one of the best sets of pipes i've heard, but she's been really holding them back on her last few albums... could that have anything to do with it maybe?

I remember back in the day, Mariah used to always get criticized for that high-octave scream she used to do. It soon became "her thing" that she did. People began to say that she just threw it into songs because she could do it. Maybe the holding back of her voice has been a result of that. She seems resentful of the artist that Tommy Mottola molded her into. Maybe this is her way of rebeling against that.
