Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone might know what's happening with my computer...and how I can fix it. Here's what's going on: Last night, at around 11:30, I had just logged out of Hotmail when my computer screen froze. My mouse could still scroll across the screen, but when I clicked on the left mouse button, nothing worked. I couldn't click on any links in my browser window, I could click on anything in my taskbar and have it come up on the screen...nothing! With the right mouse button, I could click and have the little drop-down menu come up to close certain windows, etc. But even that didn't work for everything. So, I turned the computer off. Now, when I try to turn it back on, it'll only get as far as the XP log-in window, where you have to choose which user you want to log on to XP as. The mouse still scrolls across the screen, but left-mouse button won't work...I can't even use the right mouse button to log onto XP. I don't know if I accidentally changed some sort of setting in the computer without realizing it...or if there's some sort of virus...or what it might be. Any help or advice you could give would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

And I DID try making sure that the mouse plug hadn't been pulled out of the back of the CPU slightly. That doesn't seem to be the problem.

have you tried it in safe-mode yet? I'm not quite sure what's wrong... it just may be your mouse... is there another mouse in your place in which you can test? may be a setting...

Is it just the mouse? Maybe the mouse button itself is stuck down, as if you were holding the button down all the time. It happened to my old mouse and can make things quite annoying.

I'm not quite sure if its the mouse or not... it may be or may not... one way to test it would be to try another mouse...

Mike, I don't think it's the mouse button being stuck. I can still click the left mouse button. It just doesn't do anything when I click it.
Marcus, thanks for the advice about trying another mouse. I have another one that I was gonna try. But one of the pins inside the plug is bent. So I can't plug it in. I've bought another mouse today that I'm going to try. I'm crossing my fingers to hope it works.

Okay. Problem solved! It looks like my old mouse WAS worn out. The new mouse works perfectly.
Thanks for your help!
