So, I was in computer class today learning about what qualifies as copyright and what isn't and stuff when the topic turned to facts that couldn't be copyrighted. Makes sense since people don't make facts. Then I remembered the time when redbrow was a regular here at these boards and if I remember correctly, he said that the information he posted (the going for adds list in Canada) couldn't be copied from this board by other people for use anywhere else, and I realized that he wasn't allowed to do that because that information wasn't his, nor this board's, to tell me or anyone else that we couldn't use it or post it anywhere else. You can't copyright facts. However, it was his right to stop providing that useful information if we did that, as it was him that was providing it out of the goodness of his heart and not because he had to. Just thought I'd point that out. Copyright stuff is really interesting!
I also learned that anything anybody makes themselves is copyrighted. For some reason, I always thought things weren't protected unless you paid a $20 fee to some copyright agency and they did it but that's only when you register your copyright, thus making it easier in the event that someone might come along and copy your work and claim it to be their own.

Yeah, copyright is interesting...
I suppose charts like R&R are copyrighted and can't be posted without permission even though they are technically facts about radio stations because R&R compiled the data using a particular methodology and it's their specific presentation of the facts.
I thought maybe redbrow's source was a particular trade publication or was confidential info available only to radio personnel, so he didn't want it in too many places. What happened to him? He was a very knowledgeable guy.
There were people from copyright at the school last month monitoring what was being photocopied.

Yep, that's true... Anything you post on a website that's yours is automatically copywritten.

I'm not sure really how charts work because the R&R charts are copyrighted by them, or at least we aren't allowed to reproduce them so maybe it's the order that they appear in that we can't reproduce. I can't imagine a list of songs (going for adds, for example) being copyrighted too but if so, redbrow was wrong in his own right for reproducing that list for us. I dunno. Now I'm getting down to technicalities.

All of this is pretty interesting, though.

Well, people have tried to post the American Top 40 chart (back when Casey hosted it) including myself but their sites would be removed. So I'm not really sure how it works there. Probably a combination of things.

Television Nielson ratings (audience of TV shows each night) are also copyrighted info... many television fan sites are contacted to remove such data.
