Asfyyu Saie Qrc0skdm Msnavc32 Winupdt Xsvwhkh The above programs were all found to be running on my computer - that is, before I deleted them all. I have no idea what these are. What are they? (Note: I had to use the GiPo Utilities program to get rid of Asfyyu.) I suspect that most - if not all - of them aren't exactly wanted on my computer. I suspect this because I currently can't open anything that requires an Explorer window (such as Recycle Bin, My Documents, and even My Computer!). I tried going Start-Settings-Control Panel so I could check Add/Remove Programs, but I can't do that either! Whenever I try to do any of those, I get an "illegal operation" window for Explorer, and then a dialog box that says "An error has occurred. Internet Explorer will now close. If this problem persists, please restart your computer." Well, I have - three times! Furthermore, I suspect my little brother may be the cause of all this. His internet habit is simple - he doesn't care what is on any website he goes to. Needless to say, this has brought many an unwanted program onto this computer. I used Start-Find to search out and delete all those programs, and all of them had Modified times of last night between 10 PM and midnight (EST) - and he was on the computer during that time. Oh, and one other thing - all of those were located in either the Windows folder or the System folder.

If you have Windows XP, try running System Restore...
If you have anything important saved to the Desktop, make sure that copy it out to the My Documents folder or somewhere else before you do this...
-Click "Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore" -Click "Restore Computer To An Earlier Time" -Click "Next"... -Select sunday the 20th on the calendar or select the nearest restore point before that. -Click "Next"... etc...
Basically, System Restore puts all of your computer's settings back to the way that they were at an earlier time...

Saie, Asfyyu, Qrc0skdm, Xsvwhkh - Part of the "Internet Optimizer" Hijacker... Tracks your internet activity.
msnavc32 - Sends information about the programs that you run and the websites that you visit to some adware company overseas.
winupdt - Part of the RBOT-FP Worm... It turns off anti-virus programs, allows others access to the files on your computer, reduces system security to a minimum, etc...

Is there anything else I can do (short of using the reformat disk), or am I screwed?

To remove the SpyWare, try both of these programs: SpyBot and AdAware . Also try, Stinger for removing the viruses/worms.

I've heard that SpyBot is completely worthless. My main goal is to fix the Explorer problem. Can I do that with Windows 98 (besides using the re-format disk)?

My main suggestion is to try AdAware and SpyBot.
It sounds like a registry setting is screwed up. I would search on google to try to find a solution.
Did you scan for viruses? Do you have working anti-virus software and are your virus definitions up to date?

I stopped getting automatic updates a month ago and I'm working on renewing the subscription for my software. (It's been ordered, but when it comes to downloading off the website, all I'm getting is the run-around... ) Search on Google to find a solution? What would I search for?

I know this thread is a couple weeks old... I had 98 and my explorer was all screwy. I am convinced Limewire did me in...All my problems started once i downloaded Limewire on my comp. From my research, there is a trojan embedded in Limewire that disrupts your explorer. I had to buy a new computer rather than go back to the start of 98
