www.radioandrecords.com/Newsroom/2005_04_01/topstory.aspwww.detnews.com/2005/screens/0504/02/D02-136718.htmWDRQ has a long legacy in town- the past 9 years the station has been primarily focused on various subsets of Contemporary Hit radio after moving to the format with a dance lean in 1996. WDRQ first arrived on the 93.1 frequency in 1972 when Detroit's first FM talk station was launched. The station then moved to a Top 40 format, followed by forays into Disco and Urban. In 1985, the WDRQ calls were set aside for a run as Soft Adult Contemporary WLTI 'The Light'. If this is indeed the next chapter in 93.1's history, it'll be interesting to see if they can make the WDRQ calls work with 'Doug'.

WDVD hot AC competitor CIDR is still in the basement. The Windsor based stations signals don't get that far out in the region as the 'sububan' based towers of most of the detroit stations. If they can't be heard.........

Head to www.dougfm.com for whoever chose Doug FM. Doug FM was chosen from an Ottawa guy named Doug, as he rants so much. So, the REAL Doug FM was poured into the Detroit airwaves, and today it sounds like the ol' CKLW, when it was CHR.

DOUG-FM is another cog in corporate machinery
By By Mike Blank | Vibe Editor
You might have noticed. If you hopped in your car, turned on the radio hoping to hear some good, old, clichéd American pop music on 93.1, you were greeted with a surprise.
Instead of the banging beats and digitally-enhanced voices from performers with obvious deficiencies of talent you got DOUG-FM. Great April Fools’ Day joke, right?
Wrong.
DOUG-FM is the new format for 93.1. The new motto is “We play everything,” which roughly translated means a collection of stale music from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and today (the reason the word “today” is used is because this first decade of the 21st century has yet to be named).
So if love hearing Duran Duran, next to Tom Petty and topped off by Boz Scaggs, then you’ll love DOUG-FM. But for some reason I have a funny feeling that most former DRQ listeners won’t be sticking around to catch Scaggs’ 70s classic “Lowdown.”
Besides the change of format, much of DRQ’s staff was also sacked. Morning co-host and perpetual tanner Rachael Hunter, producer Steve Grunwald, program director Alex Tear, music director Keith Curry, and longtime Detroit radio personality Lisa Lisa (raise your hand if can remember Lisa Lisa during the good old days of Power 96) were all let go without notice.
I’ll be honest — in last five years, I have given up hope for corporate radio so I’m not freaking out about the switch.
As my intelligence has grown and “bitterness,” if you will, has increased, I find it quite refreshing to have no idea who “famous” people are. I prefer talent to star power and thanks to the magic of the Internet, I actually have access to decent music.
However, the sudden format change of DRQ is another symptom of a diseased radio system.
During the past 25 years, major changes to Federal Communication Commission regulations have been thrust upon the American public.
Major corporations stealthily and quickly took action. Like frogs in a slowly boiling pot, the American public has had the temperatures of the radio waves steadily increased to the point that now every city in the country has the same sounding radio stations playing the same hit songs from the same record companies. Hmmm… methinks that there might be a connection.
Who do we blame?
Well, in this instance we could blame the evil corporations, specifically ABC, which owns DRQ, and more specifically the Disney Corp. that owns ABC. Wow, Mickey! It really is a small world after all.
But we should really blame ourselves for sitting on our fat American asses while our publicly owned airwaves were being destroyed in exchange for corporate profits (but Mike, Reagan was so nice and sweet when he spoke…).
It is our collective fault that radio has become another cog in the corporate moneymaking machine instead of an institution that can be used to support the Detroit cultural community.
Ever notice that a Detroit musician has to be big in New York or Los Angeles before Detroit radio stations will give them airplay?
So what can we do?
My recommendation is a total boycott of corporate radio. Listen to your CDs, MP3s, satellite radio, or even (God forbid) cassette tapes instead.
Or even better, listen only to public radio, a place where your concerns are actually given attention. In fact, right now WDET 101.9 is having their fundraiser.
If you like what they play, give them some money. You get it back at tax time and you can feel good about yourself.
Or you can tune in DOUG-FM and ponder the future fall of American society to wonderful sounds of Mr. Mister.
It’s your choice.
