I received this birthday present in the mail the other day, and for me it's an interesting read, but very typical of Billboard's books: full of surprises with what comes out on certain charts using their specific point system.
So according to this book, here are the Top 20 Artists of this era as well as the Top 20 #1 Dance/Disco hits.
If you have any questions you want to ask, you can post them here or PM me. I know some of you like this genre of music and might be interested in some stats about particular artists or songs.
Top 20 Artists:
01 Madonna
02 Janet Jackson
03 Donna Summer
04 Pet ShopBoys
05 Prince
06 Michael Jackson
07 Gloria Estefan
08 Whitney Houston
09 C+C Music Factory
10 Depeche Mode
11 Diana Ross
12 Aretha Franklin
13 New Order
14 Grace Jones
15 Ultra Naté
16 Mariah Carey
17 Erasure
18 Sylvester
19 Loleatta Holloway
20 Funky Green Dogs
Top 20 #1 Hits:
01 Bad Luck - Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - 1975
02 Thriller (album - all cuts) - Michael Jackson - 1982
03 A Lover's Holiday/The Glow Of Love/Searching - Change - 1980
04 Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah)/Everybody Dance/You Can Get By - Chic - 1978
05 I Love Music - O'Jays - 1976
06 Village People (album - all cuts) - Village People - 1977
07 Brazil - Ritchie Family - 1975

14 Don't Leave Me This Way/Any Way You Like It - Thelma Houston - 1977
15 Last Dance/After Dark/Thank God It's Friday/Take It To The Zoo - Thank God It's Friday movie soundtrack: Donna Summer/Pattie Brooks/Love & Kisses/Sunshine - 1978
16 Vertigo/Relight My Fire/Free Ride - Dan Hartman - 1979
17 Four Seasons Of Love (album - all cuts) - Donna Summer - 1976
18 Dance (Disco Heat)/You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) - Sylvester - 1979
19 Disco Inferno/Starvin'/Body Contact Contract - Trammps - 1977
20 Try It Out/Hold Tight - Gino Soccio - 1981
I'm certainly puzzled at the #1 hit, which is a good song but not what I would fit into a Top 40 list of 'classics'. It seems to be skewed by being the first #1 of the disco era on the charts Billboard used and was on the charts for an extremely long period of time (24 weeks), all in a Top 20 chart. At one time Billboard's disco chart ranked 100 songs.
Nothing as recent as the 90's appears until #40, since the turnover on the dance charts is very high and songs in recent years haven't lasted much more than 12-14 weeks.
