When I was younger the chart of record was the Billboard Hot 100, at least until 1991 or maybe 1992. When did Mediabase and/or R&R become the more accurate source? Did it have anything to do with so many songs not charting on Billboard due to lack of retail singles?

i think one of the major factors was because of the retail single, but even then, R&R isn't exactly as accurate as one would wish with the practice of payola used in today's industry.
Billboard lost most of it's appeal because (i believe) that it really didn't reflect what people liked at the time, sure it was used with single sales, but that wasn't how most people wanted to see their hits (again, i believe). With the method of keeping track of spins on the radio, and then providing people with access to see these charts, R&R/Mediabase has insured itself a greater popularity...
just my two cents

^ I agree. R&R is great, but Mediabase daily updates are the best

1992 was when i lost interest in Billboard. It was sad for me cause of all its chart history.

I still value Billboard's charts as great information sources, but since I've been on the Net, and particularly during the last few years, Mediabase is what I look to.
