Hello everyone!
My first chart of 2008 find that the top really hasn't changed all that much, but there will be an incoming slew of new songs over the next few charts as older ones retire after their 10th appearance. 4 songs retired with the last chart, and 5 debut this week. I've got to say, though, that it will be hard to top 2007 as such a strong year for music. Unless the other four songs grow on me big time, I think only one has top-of-the-chart potential ("Chasing Pavements" by Adele - thanks Adam!).
Anyway, Enur/Natasja and Matt White both move up within the Top 5, as Leona Lewis (watch what happens when her CD is released here!) and Chris Brown/T-Pain land in the Top 10. One Republic definitely has a powerful sophomore hit as "Stop & Stare" is the fastest riser, flying up 28-12. David Guetta's "Baby When The Light" and Janet's "Feedback" look like they are Top 10 potential, moving 23-14 and 29-21 respectively.
But let's get to those newcomers... you can view the full chart using the link in my signature. Enjoy and don't forget to post your comments!
NEW TO THE CHART
CHASING PAVEMENTS - Adele
Adele should quickly follow almost parallel to Leona Lewis over here if big ears perk up... "Chasing Pavements" is another gorgeous ballad with intelligent lyrics and an excellent performance. But don't compare her vocally to Leona, she's probably closer to Amy Winehouse.
CURIOUS - Danny Fernandes f/ Juelz Santana
This song has been released to radio in Canada but I don't think it's officially released for purchase. Danny Fernandes is the brother of the seemingly MIA Shawn Desman ("Shook", "Get Ready" - Fernandes is Shawn's real last name), and "Curious" portrays Danny more of a hip hop artist than Shawn. This is pretty solid for that genre, despite too-soon name checking of J. Holiday and Soulja Boy in the tune, there is the random line "We want pancakes / I want pancakes" near the end which generally leaves a smile on my face. You can hear the song on his MySpace site (there is a link to it on his picture on my chart).
LOVE SONG - Sara Bareilles
It's taken me a while to warm up to this song - put it half way between Colbie Caillat and Chantal Kreviazuk. A very decent voice with a chipper tune.
SAY - Low Level Flight
Remember Canadian Idol #1, Ryan Malcolm? Well, he's been in music makeover land, and this rock band led by him has surfaced. "Say" is a very catchy song and has loads of potential. It also showcases Malcolm's voice the way his post-Canadian Idol songs on his debut CD did not.
S.O.S. - Jonas Brothers
This is just a fun song, well sung and played. Being today's version of Hanson is not necessarily a bad thing, and I think they have potential for a better career. I haven't given up on teen pop continuing to be a big thing in 2008, I just wish more radio stations would warm up to it.
