Happy New Year! I have finished the process of setting up all of my Excel spreadsheets for 2023, and this week the top 100 songs on my personal chart playlist of 117 is in the books.
The reporting period I use is Tuesday to Tuesday, 12pm, for publishing on Friday, for the week ending Sunday. I do this just in case I decide to write and record/livestream a countdown show someday.
I was not intending the freeze the 51-100 positions for four weeks, but it turned out to be very convenient during a very busy month with planned and unplanned events.
This is the 61st week of the "reboot" - and for the first time, an artist has hit #1 a second time. I think I flubbed the estimation two weeks ago of First Aid Kit - Out of My Head's position on the top 100 of 2022, having it rank #71 for the year. In two weeks it has climbed #8-3-1. Well, it will have to be re-ranked in retrospective lists in the future. Paramore - This Is Why sits tight at #2 for a sixth week in a row. Last year, Spoon - The Hardest Cut spent seven weeks at number two before climbing to number one.
There has been a large turnover of the oldest songs off the playlist - oldest are Will Butler - A Stranger's House and Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Spitting Off the Edge of the World at 30 weeks, and Gorillaz - Cracker Island at 26 weeks. The bottom quarter of the top 100 are fairly recent songs at their peak position. Because of the playlist shedding older titles, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Beck climb twenty spots each without a bullet.
Spitting Off the Edge of the World has done very well on year-end countdowns and here is resisting fatigue that would have purged it a while ago. It has re-entered the top 100 twice, reached a low of #110 on 10/30.
Not an official single, but the title track Lizzo - Special debuts at #38. Because of the 4-week freeze, PLAINS - Problem With It debuts in the top 100 at #40, Cactus Blossoms - Tell Me That It Isn't True jumps #99-28, 71 spots, second most in the Reboot Era. This being a personal chart based on preference and recognition, its behavior should be closer to 80s era Billboard Hot 100 (when radio station PDs and record store employees essentially submitted their "preference" top 40s) than today's Hot 100. My decision to freeze coupled with the handful of Christmas songs has led to very interesting 2-week trend lines!
That's all I have, Happy New Year to everybody!
