13. Hilary Duff - Come Clean#1 for 2 weeks: April 4, 2004 - April 11, 2004 I LOVED this song! I was a huge fan of this album and I was so excited to hear this was going to become a single. I know a lot of people have been critical of Hilary's music career - especially pre-Dignity (an era that I never liked by the way), but I thought her songs were fun and they have a lot of nostalgia for me especially as someone who watched Lizzie McGuire. Like "So Yesterday", I think this song has held up well and I have zero regret about it going to #1, even if a certain asshat who used to post here made fun of me for liking "Hilary Fluff". f*ck that shit bro.

14. Kylie Minogue - Red Blooded Woman
#1 for 2 weeks: April 18, 2004 - April 25, 2004 I always liked Kylie and this song, and this song was especially a return to form for me because I never liked this album's lead single "Slow" (I remember Unkie and I watching the video and being like what the actual hell is going on lol). However, I am not sure if I agree with this going to #1. Even back then, I didn't like this song that much, and I feel like this song has since become very forgotten. I honestly remember "I Believe In You" and "Giving You Up" more than I remember this one. On one hand I don't regret this because I still like the song, but on the other... it should've been "Megalomaniac" at #1 instead tbh.

15. Kimberley Locke - 8th World Wonder#1 for 1 week: May 2, 2004 Kimberley Locke was the singer I was rooting for to win the second season of American Idol (she was third behind Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken). When I found out she was going to release an album, I was excited, and I remember hearing this when it premiered on a radio station in late 2003, and loving it. For some reason it took like 20 weeks for it to go to #1 on my chart, but I think that had a lot to do with what I said earlier in my commentary for No Doubt's "It's My Life" - my chart in like the first half of 2004 wasn't really representative of what I was listening to, because if it was, "Bad Girl" would probably be my chart's longest running #1. However, it is worth mentioning that this went to #1 the week that I joined this board, so you guys will be seeing some major changes VERY soon. Oh, and I do have a little bit of regret about this going to #1. I still like this now, but back then it was a 10 and now I'd give this like a 6. #Justice4IAmTheHighway

16. Beyonce - Naughty Girl#1 for 3 weeks: May 9, 2004 - May 23, 2004 I liked this when it was out - which is a little odd since this samples what is in my opinion Donna Summer's token bad song. I know many consider "Love To Love You Baby" a classic and I get it, but I never understood it. If I wanted to hear five minutes of moaning, I can just pull up the photo of Jerry in his underwear grabbing his crotch and get out my vibr--- okay, I'm REALLY going to get in trouble if I continue. But anyway, the way I feel about this is pretty similar to "Red Blooded Woman" in that yes I liked it at the time, but even back then I don't know if I'd say I really liked it enough for #1. The difference though is that "Red Blooded Woman" is still in my music library, and I haven't willingly listened to this since 2004. It's not a terrible song by any means - especially compared to "7/11" and that awful screamfest she did with Jack White, but I don't really care for this anymore and absolutely regret it going to #1 on my chart. Beyonce' is no Jesus, yeah, she's no f*cking Elvis.

17. Jessica Simpson - Take My Breath Away#1 for 1 week: May 30, 2004 Of ALL the Jessica Simpson songs to go to #1 on my chart... really? On one hand I understand, on the other, I don't. I LOVED Jessica from 1999-2004. I played the crap out of her first album "Sweet Kisses" when I got it for my 7th birthday, and when she started becoming super popular from the success of her reality show Newlyweds, I was so excited for her because I thought she was going to get the music success I felt she deserved (after "I Wanna Love You Forever", every single of hers before "With You" underperformed except "Irresistible" and maybe "I Think I'm In Love With You"). I will never understand why after "With You", she decided to release three covers in a row (this being the first, this was followed by a cover of "Angels" by Robbie Williams which peaked at #2, and Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" which DNC'd because it sucks). Talk about a bad career move. Unless you're the queen of covers miss Linda Ronstadt, you don't freaking do three covers in a row. Now I will say, I still like this and - unpopular opinion - I still like "Angels" too, but "With You" should've been the #1 from her and not this.

18. Avril Lavigne - Don’t Tell Me#1 for 3 weeks: June 6, 2004 - June 20, 2004 I was obsessed with Avril during the Let Go era and "Complicated", "Sk8er Boi", and "I'm With You" all went to #1 on my chart before it went online. So I knew whatever she put out next was going to be huge for me. And she didn't disappoint - I loved this one too and it was another #1 smash for her. Little did I know that this would end up becoming her only #1 from the online era, but that's what she gets for releasing crap like "Hello Kitty". I don't regret this one going to #1, but I will say this was not as strong as the Let Go singles and I now prefer two Under My Skin singles over this - "My Happy Ending", which peaked at #2, and "Fall To Pieces", which... did not chart. How the f*ck did THAT happen?!?!

19. Brandy feat. Kanye West - Talk About Our Love#1 for 1 week: June 27, 2004 I loved Brandy when I was younger. "The Boy Is Mine", "Have You Ever", "Top Of The World", and "Full Moon" remain bangers. And one of the lines in Kanye's part is, "When you met, you were a V like Madonna man." Combine these and you get a destined JT40 #1 smash in 2004! This was a banger and to be honest this was one of the last singles of hers that I really liked. Although I don't really seek this out as much as I used to and I am not as into this as I was in 2004, I wouldn't say I regret this. This was a good song.

20. JoJo - Leave (Get Out)#1 for 2 weeks: July 4 - July 11, 2004 I loved this when it was out and I especially thought JoJo was cool because she was only two years older than me! I thought the pop/R&B vibe was great and I was so happy to see this become a hit. It's held up very well and I have zero regrets about it going to #1 on my chart, even if I liked it more back then.

21. Ashlee Simpson - Pieces Of Me#1 for 4 weeks: July 18 - August 8, 2004 I have SO many amazing memories associated with this iconic banger. I loved this song right away when it was out, and during a time where I wasn't feeling as bubbly and happy, I really appreciated her edgier look. Whether or not it was authentic is still up for debate, but whatever, I don't care - I still love this song just as much as I did back in 2004 and it absolutely deserved to be a #1 smash on my chart. I heavily associate this with my early days on M4B, as Ashlee was very popular among the board members at the time (well... except a certain Kelowna guy who liked to call her "Asleep Simslut" ), and of course, this was the song at #1 on the very first episode of the Jessica's Top 40 (then Jessica's Top 25) Countdown, on July 23, 2004. So not only do I associate this song with great memories, but I also associate it with a changing tide in my music tastes, because as I was becoming more active on M4B, I was listening a lot more to Variety FM 104, the affiliated radio station of the boards at the time. So instead of listening to the all-Madonna station on Radio@Netscape all day and complaining that they keep playing the same remix of "Vogue" over and over, I was listening to shows like "Adam In The AM", On-Air With DJ Bry ( M! not FreakyFlyBry), whatever Jason's show was called where he played all the 90's R&B throwbacks, and of course, "The Variety FM Weekly Top 30". This is eventually what led to my decreasing interest in Madonna, and increasing interest in music discovery, so going forward you will start seeing a shift in my tastes. Also, spoiler alert - I recently wrote a song that could potentially be on my third album that makes a subtle reference to the VFM Weekly Top 30!

22. Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway#1 for 4 weeks: August 15 - September 5, 2004 At this point, I was a huge Kelly fan. I loved her Thankful album, which had three #1's on my chart ("Miss Independent" and "A Moment Like This" went to #1 before my chart went online). I was excited to see what was next for her. I also loved The Princess Diaries and was excited when I heard a sequel was about to come out. Then I found out Kelly was going to release a song that would be on the soundtrack for said sequel and I was even more excited! I first heard this after it was posted in the Play or Trash thread on here at the time and I loved it instantly. It was another huge #1 for me and also reminds me of the early days of my countdown show. This has aged very well and is still one of my favorites from her.

23. Alanis Morissette - Eight Easy Steps#1 for 12 weeks: September 12 - November 28, 2004 Man oh MAN where do I start with this one?? To me this is one of if not THE ultimate JessieLou song, and THE ultimate M4B/VFM song for me personally. It (undeservingly) flopped everywhere, but here on the boards and on my chart especially, it was a f*ckING MOMENT. I've pretty much been an Alanis fan my entire life. I was first introduced to her around 1997/1998 when I saw all the Jagged Little Pill-era music videos on VH1 and MTV. "Ironic" in particular was a huge favorite of mine, and I especially loved the music video (it used to be my favorite video of all-time... but then I discovered the "Outshined" alternate video ). I remember loving "Thank U" and "Hands Clean" when they were out. My parents got me Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie on cassette for Christmas in 1998, and I bought Under Rug Swept with the allowance money my Dad gave me at the time in 2002, like a day or two after I first moved to Florida. So even before this song, Alanis was always a BIG deal for me. I was disappointed in the lead single from her So-Called Chaos album, "Everything". I liked it, but I thought it was very boring especially compared to her previous lead singles. It only reached #9 on my chart, which to this day is the lowest a lead single of hers has done for me (in comparison, "Underneath" peaked at #3, "Guardian" #2, and "Reasons I Drink" #1). This one, however, was a total banger and a total return to form. To this day I am completely dumbfounded that this wasn't the lead single, I think this era would have done very differently if it was. I loved it instantly when I first heard it, and it became a regular in my Variety FM playlists. The more I heard it, the more I became hooked, and it very quickly became an event-like song for me like "Thank U" and "Hands Clean" were. This led to me getting the So-Called Chaos album for my 12th birthday (I think Unkie was the one who got it for me), and me discovering/rediscovering a lot of her older material. I ended up discovering her early Canada-only releases and "Too Hot" became a regular in my VFM playlists to the point where it even made the VFM weekly top 30 and Mr. "Let's play Daniel Powter's stupid ass song 3 times per broadcast" told me to stop playing it. Haters gonna hate I guess. I remember when I lived in New York, my parents had a family friend with a daughter a few years older than me who had a copy of Jagged Little Pill, and every time 5-year-old me would ask her if I could borrow it, she'd change the subject. In retrospect that girl was a little snot, but little me thought she was cool af. Basically the OG Ashley/Assley so to speak. I eventually bought the album at the now-defunct Circuit City in Daytona in 2002, but never listened to it until around the time this went to #1 on my chart. It has since been my favorite album of all-time and that has never changed. But as super fun as the VFM and countdown show moments were, and as super fun as it was to see this song surpass Madonna's "Hollywood" as my then-longest running #1 (a record that has since been broken by Lita Ford in 2012 and then later again by Adele in 2016), and as much of a moment as it was to see the Madonna era come to an end (I remember asking codenut to get that girl from Christina Multimedia who made all the banners for us to make me an Alanis banner to replace my Madonna one and everyone on here lost their shit ), to me the most fun part of this time hands down were the constant jokes and "randomness" on the boards between @cdennisfan (who didn't like "Eight Easy Steps") and me. Every week when this was at #1 on my chart, he would make jokes about it when commenting on my chart, and also joke about all the songs that ended up peaking at #2 because of this song's reign (how could we forget when Dannii Minogue's "You Won't Forget About Me" was "stuck behind that Canadian bitch for a freakin' eternity?"). We also of course can't forget my retaliation, when after he made a joke about how he hoped my Alanis CDs "turned into fungus", I told him to take his fungus somewhere else. Good God typing this out is so dumb but still so funny and nostalgic for me. But this also goes to show you that I have always been able to take a joke at my expense, and something I always respected about @cdennisfan is he always kept it classy and never went too far, you could always tell it was kidding around and never malicious. Some people during this time unfortunately felt the need to cross the line and bully me all because I enjoyed playing this song on VFM, but as an 11 year old girl who wanted as little conflict as possible, I never stood up for myself and always blamed myself for the bullying and nitpicking I went through from others during this time. Now that I'm older, wiser, and more mature (since that was suuucchhh an issue with me back then), I realize that those people were the problem for being hateful and nasty, and I am so grateful that none of those people are active on here anymore and that this community is much more positive than it used to be, because as fun and nostalgic as 2004 on here was, there sadly were parts of it that were toxic as well. Was I perfect? No. Are some of my older posts cringeworthy? Hell yeah, especially anything I used to say about Britney Spears. But did I deserve the treatment I got from the two Massholes? Absolutely not, and ever since I revived M4B Radio in 2015 and became a station owner myself, I have vowed to never let myself or another DJ have the experiences of bullying I had on VFM from 2004-2005 (saying “Jessica, we hate you” and then dedicating *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” to me was NOT okay back then and it absolutely would not be okay now. If anyone did that on M4B Radio that would be an automatic firing). So yeah, rant aside, this is iconic, and @cdennisfan is iconic. In fact, he kept up the iconicness nine years later during the Jessica’s Top 40: 10 Years Of Awesomeness special that aired on Jason’s Jammin’ 95, when he introduced this song and told a fictional Casey Kasem-like story about how Alanis got the inspiration for this song after eating a rapper she was working with at the time named E.Z. Steps. Alanis KNEW what she had to do - she “ate E.Z. Steps!” 😂😂😂

Alanis knew what she had to do. She ate E.Z. Steps!
Still as iconic and legendary as ever.

24. Naomi Striemer - Fall Behind#1 for 1 week: December 5, 2004 Also known at the time as "M4B's best kept secret." This Canadian singer, who was compared to Celine Dion and Evanescence, was discovered by former board member Bengino. And during a time where the Globalchart mostly consisted of mainstream pop hits, it ended up doing so well with panelists that it made the top 20 - something unheard of for an unsigned artist at the time. And it gets even better - Naomi became aware of all the support her music received here in December 2004 when 12-year-old me interviewed her on my countdown show (which also just so happened to be the week this went to #1 on my chart, which I also told her about). She was a total sweetheart to interview and I still love this song and all the memories I associate with it. She was way nicer than the guy from Pretty Boy Floyd that I interviewed in 2010, that's for sure!

25. Green Day - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams#1 for 2 weeks: December 12 - December 19, 2004 "Your chart has too much estrogen!" - Dan "Kelowna Guy" O'Hara, 2004. My chart had such a reputation for female vocalists dominating the chart in the early days that my first 24 #1's were all sung by females. This all changed in December 2004 when this soared from #9 all the way to the top spot, which at the time shocked chart viewers. Billie Joe Armstrong became the first male vocalist to reach #1 on my chart with a song that has absolutely had an impact on me - this song, as well as "Eight Easy Steps" - helped caused the shift in my music tastes to go from more mainstream pop leaning like we saw in my 2003 and early 2004 charts, to more alternative and rock music, which we'll see a lot more of in the 2005 #1's. This is easily one of my favorite #1's ever and is still one of my favorite songs ever. I do, however, regret this only spending two weeks at #1. this should've been honestly like a 5-10 weeker. Long live the emo brats!
