JERRY CANTRELL EARNS SIXTH WEEK AT #1 AND TOP DEBUT AMID MAJOR CHART SHAKEUP
Jerry Cantrell continues holding on strongly amid significant M4B success and continued enduring play with "Atone", landing a sixth consecutive week at #1 on the Burner 50. The song, as expected, surpassed the five-week reign of Turnstile's "Mystery" to become the chart's second longest reigning #1 of 2021. "Atone" would need to get to eight to match the current leader, Citizen's "I Want To Kill You", which spent a total of eight weeks at #1; however, "Atone" does hold the honor of most consecutive weeks at #1 in 2021, as "I Want To Kill You" initially spent its first five weeks at #1, retreated for several weeks, then returned to #1 for three more weeks upon the release of its parent album Life In Your Glass World.
Overall, the chart has gone through a major shakeup this week with many songs on their way down and setting the stage for a purge in the next week or two, while a number of songs make big moves and all four of this week's debuts enter the top 25, led by Cantrell's "Brighten", the second single and title track from his new solo album, at #19. After being overlooked for multiple weeks on the Next in Line list, Sam Fender gets a major start with "Aye" at #22; it's looking to follow up the top 5 success of his previous two entries "Hold Out" and "Seventeen Going Under". Rina Sawayama's faithful cover of Metallica's "Enter Sandman", taken from the Metallica-endorsed tribute to their 1991 self-titled album entitled The Metallica Blacklist, debuts at #24; it's the first ever appearance for the critically acclaimed but under the radar pop musician, who's emerged as a significant M4B core artist in recent months thanks to the influence of Julian. And Bearings enter at #25 with "Get The Need"; the song was co-written by Marshall Gallagher and Kamtin Mohager, respectively, currently and formerly of Teenage Wrist.
Elsewhere in the top 10, Thrice advances 3-2 with "Robot Soft Exorcism", expected to be a major #1 contender in the coming weeks as anticipation to see Thrice in concert approaches. Turnstile appears back to back in the top 5 with former #1 "Holiday" down 2-3 and "Fly Again" up 6-4, while adding a new top 10 entry, "Blackout", up 12-8. Softcult also enters the top 10 with "Spit It Out"; the Canadian grunge/shoegaze duo consisting of twin sisters Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn of the synthpop band Courage My Love recently took off on M4B thanks to debuts on Jessica and Kim's charts.
