Well, it's that time of year, my favourite time of the year. And it's not because of Christmas, New Year's, or my birthday (turning 38 this year... yikes!)... it's because of year-end charts!
One thing that has been a constant has been music, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the steady stream of releases have kept my chart as relevant as ever after over two decades of doing it - it has remained one of my biggest comforts during an otherwise difficult time.
As has been noted over the past few years, my chart has definitely taken a strong turn towards nostalgia, with many artists from the 70's, 80's, and 90's consistently scoring big hits on my chart, with the usual suspects such as Kate Voegele, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, among others, still remaining strong as my chart has entered a new decade.
2020 also saw Harry Styles and Dua Lipa score their biggest eras to date, which will be represented on here.
If you're listening to M4BCC Radio this Monday, December 28, you'll get to hear my year-end chart starting at 10 am Eastern time!
100. Marshmello & Demi Lovato - OK Not To Be OK (Peak: #14; 10 weeks on)
Kicking the top 100 off is a mental health awareness anthem, which marks Marshmello's only appearance, and the first of three for Demi Lovato.
99. Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia (Peak: #14; 13 weeks on)
The artist with the most songs on the list is Dua Lipa - she has six, all of which come from the same album to which this was the title track.
98. Dagny - Somebody (Peak: #11; 11 weeks on)
Three acts from Norway made the top 100, and the first of them is Dagny with her biggest hit to date on my chart.
97. Pearl Jam - Retrograde (Peak: #18; 13 weeks on)
Pearl Jam made their long-awaited return to the scene in 2020, and this song was one of the highlights from their "Gigaton" album.
96. Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now (Peak: #1 For 2 weeks; 19 weeks on)
Here's the second of six for Dua Lipa; this held over from 2019 and ranks for a second year in a row.
95. Richard Marx - Front Row Seat (Peak: #23; 14 weeks on)
He's been going since the 80's, and I feel this is one of his best during my chart's 22-year run so far. This song, which reminds me of his 80's-90's heyday, is the only non-top 20 hit in this year's chart.
94. Sabrina Carpenter - Let Me Move You (Peak: #16; 13 weeks on)
Disney pop singer Sabrina Carpenter has had several chart appearances so far, but this is her biggest for me so far, reaching the top 20 back in the summer.
93. Evanescence - The Game Is Over (Peak: #13; 12 weeks on)
It was a long-awaited comeback for Evanescence, whose forthcoming album is set for a 2021 release. While the singles so far all charted, none made my top 10, but this was just strong enough to make my top 100 of the year.
92. Tyler Shaw - Remember (Peak: #15; 12 weeks on)
While he had several top 10 hits in the mid-2010's, Tyler Shaw's latest wasn't quite big enough for top 10 on my chart, but still had a solid run amd made it into my top 100 of the year.
91. Carly Rae Jepsen - Summer Love (Peak: #11; 11 weeks on)
For her past two studio albums, an accompanying B-sides album was released; "Dedicated Side B" gave us this disco-influenced track, which narrowly missed my top 10.
90. Dixie Chicks - Gaslighter (Peak: #12; 12 weeks on)
14 years have passed since their previous album, and the former Dixie Chicks, now The Chicks, delivered a solid comeback here.
89. Gabby Barrett - I Hope (Peak: #20; 15 weeks on)
One of this year's biggest breakthrough artists was country-pop sensation Gabby Barrett. Her debut release was a top 20 hit on my chart, and a huge crossover smash.
88. Chris Osmond - Dreamer (Peak: #20; 16 weeks on)
There have been several second-generation musicians trying to break through, and this song, by the son of 70's teen idol Donny Osmond, was a prime example, with an adult contemporary sound that would fit in with his family's other records.
87. The 1975 - If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know) (Peak: #12; 12 weeks on)
British alternative rockers The 1975 have made my chart many times over the past few years, and so far this is their biggest hit on my chart. Still waiting for that inevitable top 10 for them...
86. Niall Horan - No Judgement (Peak: #8; 11 weeks on)
Here's the lowest top 10 hit who peaked within 2020. Despite its short run, it continued the top 10 tally for Niall Horan, and is his first of two songs represented here.
85. The Go-Go's - Club Zero (Peak: #13; 12 weeks on)
And here's another comeback! Just in time for their documentary, the Go-Go's reunited to release this song, throwing back to their classic sound from the 80's.
84. Hailee Steinfeld - I Love You's (Peak: #15; 13 weeks on)
Taking a sample from Annie Lennox's "No More I Love You's", singer/actress Hailee Steinfeld reworked it into this, which was a moderate hit for me within my top 20.
83. Marina Kaye - The Whole 9 (Peak: #13; 13 weeks on)
The only artist from France in the top 100, and part of a mini-"Euro-invasion" for me, Marina Kaye delivered this #13 peaker for me over the spring and summer.
82. ArtistsCAN - Lean On Me (Peak: #5; 11 weeks on)
The COVID-19 pandemic generated several charity singles, and this one, by various Canadian artists, was one of my favourites, becoming the third various artists charity single - all of which were Canadian - to reach my top 5 in my chart's history. This was a cover of the late Bill Withers's classic "Lean On Me".
81. Nancy Wilson - The Rising (Peak: #4; 9 weeks on)
It's taken her nearly half a century after performing with the legendary band Heart, but co-founder Nancy Wilson has finally planned her first solo album. This Bruce Springsteen cover has been going strong in my top 10, and became the first top 10 since my chart started for Heart or either of their lead sisters.
80. The Pretenders - The Buzz (Peak: #16; 13 weeks on)
Another legendary band who returned in 2020 was the Pretenders, scoring another top 20 victory with "The Buzz". Their latest album "Hate For Sale" has proven that they haven't skipped a beat as it's reminiscent of their first two classic albums.
79. Alicia Keys - Underdog (Peak: #12; 13 weeks on)
She's been a constant presence on the pop and soul charts for nearly two decades now, and this surprise pop hit became a hit for me as well, showing time hasn't slowed her down one bit.
78. Astrid S - It's OK If You Forget Me (Peak: #6; 13 weeks on)
Also part of the Euro-invasion is Norwegian singer Astrid S, who got her first top 10 on my chart this year after several lower charters, peaking at #6 near the end of the year. The future remains bright for this young starlet!
77. Twenty One Pilots - Level Of Concern (Peak: #9; 13 weeks on)
Another COVID-19 inspired song here, from the indie duo Twenty One Pilots. This became their first top 10 hit since "Stressed Out" for me, and remains one of my favourites from them so far.
76. Blink 182 - Quarantine (Peak: #10; 13 weeks on)
Speaking of COVID-19, here's another different take on it, with the kind of humour only Blink 182 can deliver! This became their first top 10 hit of the 2020's, making them one of a handful of acts with top 10's in the past four decades.
