50. The Man Who - Natural Villain
Weeks: 18 (17 in 2020), Peak: 13 (13 in 2020)
Every year there are a couple of random CanCon acts to make my chart out of nowhere, and The Man Who were one of them. I would be lying if I said I looked up more of their music, and would be surprised if I would recognize anything else of theirs, but this one broke through for me right around the holidays last year and had a good run. I'll keep looking at my release radar for anything else these guys might release.
49. The Beaches - Lame
Weeks: 14, Peak: 4
Another banger from The Beaches. For whatever reason I still find my self surprised when they release a great song, which is silly considering they've had 3 year-end top 10 songs over the past few years now (including one this year, coming up!). The Toronto all-female quartet is in my opinion the CanCon act who needs to break into the US market the most, as their sound is exactly what alternative should sound like in 2020, and now 2021.
48. Beabadoobee - Care
Weeks: 17, Peak: 10
A newcomer in 2020, Beabadoobee first charted as a feature artist on Powfu's "Deathbed", and this was her breakthrough solo hit. I was surprised to hear this mid-late alt rock solo female sound...something that would fit on a Veruca Salt or early Liz Phair album. I'm looking for her to continue to grow and produce many hits to come. Her current single "Worth It" is likely to feature much higher on this list next year.
47. Juice WRLD & Marshmello - Come & Go
Weeks: 19, Peak: 13
RIP Juice WRLD. The "mumble rapper's" first posthumous effort was a surprising hit for me. I didn't think I would like this when I saw it appear in the alternative top 50, but I gave it a go and it shockingly clicked. Marshmello has now appeared on my chart 3 times and has surprising alternative cred from his work with Bastille and Chvrches.
46. Anyway Gang - Eyes Of Green
Weeks: 19, Peak: 12
This CanCon act actually broke through this year in Canada with their debut single "Big Night", and although close, that DNC'd here. This follow up however was pretty good, and continued to grow into a slow-burner that almost hit the top 10. Hopefully not the last appearance from these guys.
45. The Drew Thomson Foundation - A Little More Time
Weeks: 32 (14 in 2020), Peak: 5 (5 in 2020)
This one took that cake as 2019's biggest random obscure CanCon smash on my chart, going top 5. Unfortunately it was limited by being a split-year hit, but I still love hearing this one. I've come across a few other songs of theirs, but this is still the only standout. Hopefully next album they'll return with another smash of a lead single.
44. Ruby Waters - Supernatural
Weeks: 21, Peak: 15
The Serena Ryder sound is back on Canadian alternative radio, and it's in the form of Ruby Waters. This sounded exactly like an early 2010s Serena Ryder hit would sound like, but honestly I think I preferred this to anything I've ever heard from Serena. The longevity of this was surprising for a non-top 10 song, but 2020 didn't produce nearly as much worth charting as in recent years, so many of the songs here, like this one, had longer than typical runs.
43. James Bay - Chew On My Heart
Weeks: 19, Peak: 12
James Bay has somewhat disappointed for me since "Hold Back The River" was a 3-week #1 here, but for the second straight era, he led with a near-top 10 single. Even though this peaked at #12, while "Pink Lemonade" got to #11, I think this is the more memorable one which will hold up better in the future. Hopefully he keeps releasing solid stuff.
42. Silversun Pickups - Toy Soldiers
Weeks: 19, Peak: 11
I hope Martika is proud of this cover, because the Silversuns absolutely killed it (in a good way). I was skeptical at first, but was so happy to see it work out. After they achieved their second biggest hit on my chart with a song still to come earlier in the year, I was pleasantly surprised that they followed it up so nicely.
41. Jackie - Unspun
Weeks: 22, Peak: 13
Another breakthrough CanCon female-fronted back trying to bring back the mid-late 90s sound, this one was really good, and clicked with me for a long time. Similar to Ruby Waters, they benefited from the lack of competition in 2020, but I think I'll be happy to keep hearing this one in the future, and hopefully they slingshot their way into significant relevant on Canadian alt radio in the early 2020s.
40. UPSAHL - Smile For The Camera
Weeks: 21, Peak: 12
If you're like me and have been disappointed by The Pretty Reckless since their "Going To Hell" era, and wondered "what would a good Pretty Reckless song sound like in 2020?" Well, this is the answer. UPSAHL gives that sort of vibe, mixed with an alternative/garage rock sound. So far this was her only appearance, but I dig this sound, so here's hoping for more out of her.
39. Sum 41 - Never There
Weeks: 23 (16 in 2020), Peak: 10 (10 in 2020)
Every new Sum 41 era nowadays leaves me guessing whether or not the music will be any good or not. Sum 41 in the late 2010s have really done well for themselves. Ever since Derrick Whibley got sober, they modernized their sound into something more friendly for the times than their older pop-punk stuff would hold up. It was fantastic for them to return to the top 10 for me for the 11th time, with the best ballad they've made since "Some Say", to be honest.
38. Highly Suspect - 16
Weeks: 34 (15 in 2020), Peak: 1 for 4 weeks (3 in 2020)
This was was controversial within the rock community, and especially within Highly Suspect's fanbase. I never got the hate for this one though. I know the sound changed a bit, it's more alternative friendly than anything they've released before, and as much as the theme bothers people, this is something that actually happened to their lead singer, so I mean I can't say I get any of the cringe some people feel at the lyrics. Regardless, it was their second #1 on my chart after "Lydia" back in 2015, and 3rd song to spend 30+ weeks on the chart after "Lydia" and "My Name Is Human". For now, they remain a core Cody act...but they are starting to get a little weird...
37. Billy Talent - I Beg To Differ (This Will Get Better)
Weeks: 21, Peak: 11
I could copy and paste what I said about Sum 41 into this Billy Talent description. This was an awesome era, with this one being the second biggest of the three hits on my chart this year. Again, a fantastic ballad from a band that needs to adjust to stay relevant in 2020.
36. Cage The Elephant - Black Madonna
Weeks: 22, Peak: 10
Overall, this was by far their most successful era on my chart, with three top 10 hits. This one wasn't as strong as the two singles that came before it in my opinion, but they are easily one of the most consistent and enjoyable alternative rock bands around right now. It's funny considering I've DNC'd two of their biggest hits over the years in "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" and "Come A Little Closer", but I've grown to really like those years later. I'm glad their stuff is more instant for me nowadays.

35. Machine Gun Kelly Ft. Blackbear - My Ex's Best FriendWeeks: 18, Peak: 3 Here's the second of 5 appearances for MGK in this year's top 100. His new pop punk sound, which is a throwback to the mid 00s, was an absolute breath of fresh air in 2020, and a much needed one at that. This is probably the most traditional sounding MGK single to appear this year, but even at that, the pop punk influence cannot be denied, and there's a reason why this has crossed over to CHR. There are still 3 songs to come, all of which I think are better songs than this, but I still dig this one. 34. Of Monsters And Men - VisitorWeeks: 16, Peak: 1 for 2 weeks This was a fantastic return from the Icelandic indie-folk group. Aside from "Crystals" back in 2015, their lead and second singles always seem to smash on my chart, and this was no exception. My current #1 is yet another one of theirs which I'll probably continue to happily listen to for years to come. If I had one small criticism about this, it's that I wish they ended the song with a powerful 3rd chorus...something which would have set this apart as an all-time favourite for me, and honestly this has always been basically my least favourite song structure choice. Regrdless, you know I have to love it if it reached #1 anyway! 33. SHAED - ThunderWeeks: 23, Peak: 8 "Trampoline" took an eternity to grow on me. I charted it basically 5 months after it entered the US alt chart and eventually crossed to CHR. This one though was instant, and actually made me pretty excited about the sound this band could bring to the table. It's too bad that it didn't do as well for me as another infamous song titled "Thunder" but this was still great nonetheless! 32. Billy Talent - Reckless ParadiseWeeks: 23 , Peak: 7 And we've reached the final appearance on the list for Billy Talent, with their top song from this era. I thoroughly enjoyed their 2020 return (onviously), but this one was the most special of the trio of songs that were released, and one which could have fit in on just about any of their albums. It's success on the Canadian rock and alt formats only validates that these guys are still gonna be around for a few years yet. As these were all non-album singles, I expect to hear more Billy Talent in 2021. 31. Third Eye Blind - WaysWeeks: 23, Peak: 10 The first of two 90s legacy acts in this set, Third Eye Blind returned with "Ways", the follow-up to "Screamer", which unfortunately DNC'd on my chart. "Ways" was subject to more mixed reviews, but it had the classic Third Eye Blind sound, one which probably would've fit in on their 3rd album, "Out Of The Vein". They did recently hit #1 on my chart back in 2019 with "10", so the potential for future success still certainly exists for them. 30. Of Monsters And Men - WarsWeeks: 30 (19 in 2020), Peak: 1 for 3 weeks (1 for 1 week in 2020) Of Monsters And Men pulled off the feat of being my final #1 in back to back years, ans this was my #1 at the end of 2019. "Wars" is an absolute bop, becoming my second favourite single of theirs period. It's so refreshing that both Ragnar and Nanna are able to carry songs with powerful vocal performances, and really keeps them sounding fresh and the listener completely surprised at what is to come whenever they put out a new song. That being said, they haven't really done a duet in awhile, so I'm hoping for one of those soon. 29. Machine Gun Kelly - Concert For AliensWeeks: 20, Peak: 3 Appearance #3 of 5 from MGK is the digital single he released when the album dropped. While "Bloody Valentine" is more mid 00s pop punk, this is more late 90s/early 00s Blink-182, a fantastic unique sound within a wonderfully diverse pop punk record. I get why "My Ex's Best Friend" was the radio single, but damn, I wish it was this one. Hopefully "Forget Me Too" can accomplish what this one couldn't commercially. 28. Mumford And Sons - Blind Leading The BlindWeeks: 29 (20 in 2020), Peak: 4 (4 in 2020) I've always appreciated Mumford And Sons, and this actually became their 3rd biggest hit on my chart in terms of total points, behind "Ditmas" and "I Will Wait". I fully acknowledge that this band lacks diversity and innovation, as this sounds exactly like it would belong in 2010/2011, but I'm fine with that if I'm being honest. In an era with kaplancore and weird tik tok zoomer crap like "347aiden" and "Foushée", whatever the hell these people think they are, something that sounds familiar, and you know, actually good...is a nice change of pace. 27. Neon Trees - Used To LikeWeeks: 27 (21 in 2020), Peak: 5 (5 in 2020) I thought this band was done. After the "Pop Psychology" era failed to live up to the commercial success of its two predecessors, Neon Trees released a non-ablum single called "Songs I Can't Listen To", which flopped, and I kind of thought that was it for them, and that they'd disappear into obscurity. Clearly I was wrong, as this came back, became a US alt top 5 and brought them back to their roots in terms of sound. Unfortunately their synth-heavy indie-pop sound is dying fast in terms of popularity, it was another nice change from the weird shit moving up the charts, sort of like what I said about Mumford And Sons. 26. Awolnation Ft. Alex Ebert - Mayday!! Fiesta FeverWeeks: 26, Peak: 8 Awolnation haven't been the most consistent band on my chart, however this was a solid follow-up single to the song still to come on this list. It was a bit of a slow-grower, but one day it just clicked for me when I was about to stall it around the #20 spot, which contributed to a top 10 run lasting half the year on my chart. One thing Awolnation does well is be progressive with their sound and keep everything sounding fresh album to album. This was no exception. 25. Seether - DangerousWeeks: 25, Peak: 6 ROCK AND ROOL IS BACK BABY! - Well, not really. Rock and rool is dead. Seether isn't even really rock and rool. They are one of the most successful post-grunge bands of all time, but they did that without ever really becoming parodies of themselves, and while keeping things rather dark and serious over the years. This was their trademark banger of a lead single, which is something I was actually more surprised about than I should have been. 24. Semisonic - You're Not AloneWeeks: 24, Peak: 6 This was shocking. Never in a million years did I think I'd ever care about, let alone chart another Semisonic song again. This was a fantastic song, and ended up becoming my second favourite Semisonic song period, after "Closing Time". I still wish this was released in 1998, you know, to have kept them relevant and all, but it was so nice to hear something this good with a pure 90s sound in 2020. 23. Awolnation - The BestWeeks: 28 (20 in 2020), Peak: 1 for 2 weeks (1 for 2 weeks in 2020) Awolnation got to #1 for the second time with their lead single this era, "The Best". It clicked instantly, becoming their second biggest hit on my chart after "Handyman", and this song only got better when they released a new version in march featuring Alice Merton. Awolnation are easily still in their prime and not going away anytime soon. 22. Best Coast - Everything Has ChangedWeeks: 28, Peak: 7 This was the chart debut from this unique LA based indie rock duo, despite them being around since 2009. This sounds like a throwback to the 90s...which unfortunately made it too 'heavy' for Kaplan's alternative format. "OMG, not GUITARZ!!!!". Like a few other chart newbies in 2020 though, I can't say I've looked for, or have come across anything else of theirs, so hopefully this wasn't just a flash in the pan. 21. The Black Keys - Shine A Little LightWeeks: 25, Peak: 4 The Black Keys have become a "core act" on my chart, with two #1s, and several top 5s and top 10s.I was happy when this was released, as it was the one song from the album that had a chance at making it their most successful chart era for me, and that's exactly what would end up happening. "Lo/Hi" was a #1 hit and my #2 song of 2019, and both "Go" and "Shine A Little Light" reached the top 5, making this their first album with 3 top 5s. I think this was the weakest of the 3, but obviously as you can see from it's chart position, I still love it.

20. W3apons - Bye Baby Gone
Weeks: 24, Peak: 3
After scraping my chart a couple of times the last couple of years with "Off The Top of My Heart" and "She Was The One", they finally had their big breakout hit, with this catchy Canadian active rock hit. Their verses have always been well-structured, but this is the first one that had a chorus that really pulled me in, and as a result it had a very deep chart run, getting to #3. Look for their current single,"Broken Promises" to debut shortly and possibly appear on this list in 2021!
19. July Talk - Governess Shadow
Weeks: 27, Peak: 5
July Talk's return was good, but I think how excited I was for new stuff from them is likely why this did so well. The song was fine, and I liked it quite a bit for awhile to keep it on the chart for awhile, but I was really hoping for something more along the lines of "Push + Pull", or "Picturing Love" from their last album. Nevertheless, they remain consistently good despite their follow-up single, "The News" becoming a relative flop. Hopefully they have a bounce-back 3rd single to follow.
18. Bastille Ft. Graham Coxon - What You Gonna Do???
Weeks: 22, Peak: 1 for 1 week
I absolutely love it when Bastille gets "loud" (relatively speaking, for 2020 standards). When they are more guitar driven, the songs are typically masterpieces, like this was. You can imagine my disappointment at hearing "Survivin'" after how much of a banger this was. I really hope it's relative flop commercially doesn't discourage Bastille from making more songs like this!
17. Silversun Pickups - Don't Know Yet
Weeks: 31 (23 in 2020), Peak: 2 (2 in 2020)
I never thought the Silversun Pickups would ever make anything as good as their best stuff from their first 3 albums after they faded a bit over the last 7 or 8 years. This was the best Pickups song I've heard since "The Pit", and has become their biggest hit on my chart, peaking at #2. Not only that, but it revitalised my interest in the band, likely contributing somewhat to how instantly I jumped on "Toy Soldiers", which you saw earlier in the list. I hope this wasn't just a fluke!
16. Eliza & The Delusionals - Just Exist
Weeks: 31 (24 in 2020), Peak: 1 for 4 weeks (1 for 4 weeks in 2020)
This Australian quartet squeaked into the US Alt top 50 at the end of 2019, which caused me to give it a go, and man, this was an absolutely sensational find. Musically and lyrically, this is as 90s as it gets. It is an absolute shame this wasn't bigger, because it absolutely kills, having gotten to #1 on my chart for 4 weeks in 2020, spending 31 weeks total on the chart. They have a couple of other good songs as well so I have hope this isn't it for them, but I have a feeling this will forever be my favourite, regardless of what else they release. If there is one song on here I could recommend to the M4B masses, it's this one.
15. Arkells - Years In The Making
Weeks: 27, Peak: 6
The Arkells have become a core act on my chart in the 2010s, easily one of the top 10 or so most successful ones. I wasn't surprised at all as to how instant and catchy this was, which is pretty much the formula for their singles nowadays. Look for the Arkells still to come further up the list, as despite how good this song is, there's one I liked even more coming up!
14. Glorious Sons - Closer To The Sky
Weeks: 28, Peak: 2
Glorious Sons have absolutely broken out this era, with this one being their 3rd straight top 3 hit from this album. They have become such a core act on my chart that they were actually my most listened to artist in 2020, according to Spotify's admittedly less than reliable statistics. Look for anything they put out in 2021 to be around this position, or higher in my 2021 year-end list.
13. Ferraro - You Look Good Like That
Weeks: 30, Peak: 3
And the highest obscure CanCon award in 2020 goes to Ferraro. I don't remember even hearing about this band before I stumbled onto this song after it spent about 2 weeks inside the Canadian Alt Top 50. One of 2020's most infectious hooks came in an obscure CanCon single. Not to American alternative radio dj: Maybe CanCon is more deserving of airplay than Kaplancore. Active Rock, despite the mess they are in, figured this out, and regularly play superior, and somewhat random Canadian rock bands to alot of the washed up artists still fighting for relevance there. If only alternative would give CanCon a chance too...
12. Machine Gun Kelly - Why Are You Here
Weeks: 30, Peak: 4
This is the song which got my on the MGK hype train in 2020. I did like "I Think I'm Okay" with Yungblud and Travis Barker last year, but this gave me hope for what he was doing, and was released merely as a teaser for the rumours which he would soon after confirm, that he was working on a pop-punk album. Funny enough, lyrically this is more of an emo rap song, but he does it completely melodically and with the use of traditional, 2000s sounding alternative rock instrumentals. It wasn't his top song of the year on this list, as that one is still to come, but the song was so good it fell just two spots short of my year-end top 10.
11. Shinedown - Atlas Falls
Weeks: 31, Peak: 3
Well, this was a surprise. I haven't loved anything from Shinedown since..."I'll Follow You"...back in like 2013. It's been seven years since they produced a song that justifies the ridiculous top 5 streak they have on Billboard's mainstream rock chart, having done that now with all 27 singles they've ever sent to radio. Shinedown and Seether are basically what's left of true, good post-grunge without going full rock and rool, so I'm really hoping they don't fall off significantly after this effort.

10. Arkells - Quitting You
Weeks: 22, Peak: 1 for 7 weeks
We kick off the top 10 with the top song of the year from chart all-stars the Arkells. "Quitting You" is the single from their acoustic remix album "Campfire Chords" where they essentially produced new acoustic versions of some of their biggest songs, and included this new track as well. The most DWAG (douchebag with a guitar) song they've ever made, this was fantastic, and good enough to become their 3rd #1 on my chart. This would've been much higher without the year split.
9. Hayley Williams - Simmer
Weeks: 30, Peak: 1 for 1 week
This one grew on me. When I first heard this solo effort, I thought it was missing...Paramore. Well, a few listens later and I really dug this. Unfortunately nothing else she released this year (which was basically her whole album, as king princessed singles0 really hit quite as well as this one. I would be lying if I said I wanted her to continue solo instead of sticking with Paramore, but this one at least gave me that much appreciated Hayley Williams fill in 2020.
8. The Killers - My Own Soul's Warning
Weeks: 27, Peak: 1 for 3 weeks
The second single from this era, The Killers achieved yet another #1 with this banger. If you told me the Killers would put out some of their best work ever in 2020 I would've laughed, but the whole album was just fantastic. Another victim of the split year, though not as much as some other other songs, this probably would've been a tad higher with a full year.
7. All Time Low Ft. Blackbear - Monsters
Weeks: 32, Peak: 2
I've said it a few times so far, but pop punk began making a comeback in 2020, and this is probably the purest pop punk megahit of the year. All Time Low were unfortunate to break out a bit too late in the 00s. They came about 2 yeas after Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, and Paramore broke out, and by that point the emo pop punk style peaked and was declining, so they never had the same commercial success as the others. Well, patience is rewarded, because this became one of the biggest pop punk hits in the history of alternative radio in 2020. Yeah, it features a mumble rapper, but his part is hardly what makes the song great, yet honestly he fits really well. If you're checking this out for the first time though, I would recommend NOT listening to the Demo Lovato version, as she basically made it a screamo song.
6. The Federal Empire - I Never Liked Your Friends
Weeks: 31, Peak: 1 for 5 weeks
Here'e the most obscure of 2020's top 10. This song actually came out in fall 2019, but broke through at the end of 2019 and I didn't chart it until January. As soon as I heard this for the first time, I was like "wow, this sounds very, very familiar" Didn't take long from there to figure out that the lead single of Carolina Liar provides the vocals here. This sounded like it could be on "Coming To Terms", Carolina Liar's debut album, and in my opinion, one of the most underrated albums of the 00s. Unfortunately I didn't care much for the other songs of theirs I heard this year, but this was one of my favourite jams of the year, especially just before COVID hit.
5. The Beaches - Want What You Got
Weeks: 36 (30 in 2020), Peak: 1 for 5 weeks (1 for 5 weeks in 2020)
The Beaches have now finished with a top 10 year-end hit for 3 straight years, as "T-Shirt" was my #9 of 2018, "Snake Tongue" my #10 of 2019, and now they hit the year-end top 5 with "Want What You Got", which has become my favourite song of theirs. I've honestly yet to hear a song from them that I don't like, and I get excited anytime I see them release a new single, as frankly, they're becoming an automatic hit generator on my chart. Expect to see current single "Desdemona" in 2021.
4. Twenty One Pilots - Level Of Concern
Weeks: 31, Peak: 1 for 9 weeks
Here's the years biggest COVID themed hit. A direct response to the COVID pandemic, I thought this would be a gimmick similar to Christmas music at first, but man was I wrong, It stuck around forever, becoming arguably the biggest alternative hit of the year, and spending 9 weeks at #1 on my chart. Like the Beaches before, these guys seem to hit big with everything on my chart nowadays, with this becoming their 4th #1 here.
3. The Killers - Caution
Weeks: 32, Peak: 1 for 2 weeks
And here's the other one, and the lead single from th Killers this era. If I'm being honest, I actually think I like "My Own Soul's Warning" just a tad more, but clearly they were one of the artists of the year with two absolutely epic singles. I remember this being a much needed treat when it came out early in the pandemic, and I think I can speak for all Killers fans when I say this song helped so much in getting through 2020.
2. Machine Gun Kelly - Bloody Valentine
Weeks: 34, Peak: 1 for 10 weeks
I don't know what else I can say about MGK in 2020. Here he is at last, with his biggest hit of the year. If you asked me whether this one, or my #1 song was my favourite of 2020, I'd probably give a different answer depending on the day. He absolutely knocked it out of the park with the Blink-182 meets Fall Out Boy sound he went for in this one, and I see myself putting this on my all-time favourite songs playlist fairly soon. This also has by far my favourite video of the year, with the Megan Fox crazy psycho killer theme. This was also incidentally how MGK and Megan Fox announced their relationship to the world, which was fun.
1. KennyHoopla - How Will I Rest In Peace If I'm Buried By A Highway?
Weeks: 41, Peak: 2
And for the first time ever, my #1 of the year is a song that peaked at #2. It's funny, because this had a fairly slow rise, and by the time I elevated it into my top 10, I became obsessed with it. It's crazy to think how talented KennyHoopla is. You don't hear many african-american artists outside of the hip hop or R&B scene nowadays, but Kenny doesn't include any elements from those genres in this song, like at all. It's a straight-up alternative rock song, and he absolutely crushed it better than any alternative rock artist did with any of their songs all year, in my opinion. He's also shown the ability to create different types of indie rock, and his latest single is a flat out pop punk song as well. There is no artist I'm more excited about in 2021 than KennyHoopla. Here's hoping for more bangers like this one and "Estella". He fully deserves this #1 spot of 2020.
