At one point in time, the Hot AC format used to be the "safe for work" pop stations with minimal rap and a focus on the 18-54 age group. In many ways today, that's no longer true. Sure, fewer edgy songs are played and less rap is played on Hot AC, but generally speaking, both formats are vying for the same listeners. According to Nielsen, more than 80% of the most popular songs played on one format are played on the other format, and more than 45% of CHR/Pop listeners also listen to Hot AC. Aside from the tone of the DJs and imaging, there seems to be minimal differentiation between the two formats. Looking at the playlist reports, most Hot AC stations are just as quick to play current, new pop music as their CHR competitors. Even several Top 40 countdown shows have caught on to this and now use the combined tally of both radio formats to determine where songs are ranked (e.g. Rick Dees), and not the official Mediabase ones for either CHR or Hot AC.
So, the question is… Is Hot AC and CHR/Pop converging into the same radio format? Or… is Hot AC becoming the new CHR – but, with a focus on adults?

I miss when Hot AC was a distinct format... I've definitely lamented its decline into the same basicness I can hear anywhere, and I feel mumble rap has no place on Hot AC.
