So, Billboard decided to release the top 50 "rock" songs of the decade. And, a lot of people are upset because almost none of the songs on the list are rock. See for yourself...
Here's the top 10:
1. Imagine Dragons - Believer
2. Imagine Dragons - Thunder
3. Imagine Dragons - Radio Active
4. Panic! At The Disco - High Hopes
5. The Lumineers - Ho Hey
6. Twenty One Pilots - Heathens
7. Walk The Moon - Shut Up And Dance
8. Portugal. The Man - Feel It Still
9. Twenty One Pilots - Ride
10. Twenty One Pilots - Stressed Out

"Shut Up And Dance" sounds like a classic rock song, and probably belongs here (though it is quite poppy). Beyond that, all of the songs in the top 10 are more alt pop or folk pop than they are rock. Saying that Imagine Dragons' "Believer" was the best rock song of the 2010's is kinda like saying "All Star" by Smash Mouth was the best rock song of the 90's. Sure, it made it to #2 on Alternative radio, but everyone knows it's a pop song. Just because a song was recorded by a band with guitarist, bassist, and a drummer does not automatically make it rock (as Billboard would have us believe).
Sure, these songs were the most played in the Alternative/Rock super-genre, throughout the decade - however, many (if not most) of their spins come from airplay on pop radio and streams from fans of pop and alternative pop music. (Yes, for the past few years, spins on pop and AC radio have been factoring into the Hot Rock chart - it's dumb, I know). And while some of these songs were big hits on Alternative radio, many of them are certainly not rock. In my opinion, Billboard should have put more effort into ranking the songs with the most cultural impact in a particular genre, rather than just lazily giving us a list of the songs with the most spins or biggest audience. Or, at the very least be honest with us and call it the Top 50 Greatest Alternative Pop/Rock/Indie songs of the decade.
Anyway, I've been seeing lots of articles, ranting YouTube vidoes, and angry tweets and blog posts about this, and was I just curious what you guys thought.
