Well, by popular request (well, from Ari lol) I thought I'd write my review on the Celine Dion concert I attended last night. She's also performing again tonight, but I'll hold onto my cash and let someone else have my seat, as I'll be surprised if it's not sold out again. In fact, I think my excitement from last night's Facebook posts may have encouraged a few to snap up tickets today, including a friend of mine who is a huuuuge Madonna fan, so is skeptical about Celine. If he comes back saying she sucked, I'll slap him one
Anyway, MY review.
I last saw Celine Dion perform in the exact same venue 10 years ago, in 2008. Given that I only joined M4BCC in 2010, that must've happened prior to me being here, but let me assure you, I was excited last night as I was a decade ago. In fact, I couldn't believe that Celine was even coming to Brisbane. I had written her off as one of those artists that only comes to Australia and goes the two major cities (Sydney and Melbourne) and trust me, artists who do that, I have verrrry little respect for. But, I am in Australia's third biggest city and it's good to see artists doing proper capital city tours of nearly every Australian state. There are still three cities that miss out consistantly (being Darwin, Hobart and Australia's Capital City, Canberra, surprisingly!). Elton John is the one big artist that I can think of who will specifically play shows in the smaller Australian cities - last year he did shows in ONLY Hobart and Mackay (which is a city in my state up north a bit!) so that's kinda cool.
Anyway, I'm rambling. Celine!!!!
Look, the woman was blessed with a set of pipes, let's face it. She is my ultimate diva and has been since the age of like 13. I used to play and replay her cassette album, "Falling Into You" over and over, and it wasn't cheap to buy a cassette in a small country town back in the 90's, but I'm sure glad I did, because it brought me so much listening pleasure over the years.
Then to get to see her in 2008 was just... well I just couldn't, you know? Absolutely blessed. And the poor darl was sick at the time I remember, but she still blew the roof off of that entertainment centre.
So to get to see her AGAIN, with Celine now being 50 - SO SO cool. And this time she wasn't sick!
Okay, the first thing I will say, is that I thought the sound was set a little too loud. Maybe I'm just getting old, but it was ever so slightly loud, but not enough to be uncomfortable, you know? It just needed to be turned down ever so slightly. I just feel like compared to when I saw her last time, this time was noticeably louder. Then again I may have had 10 years of hearing-loss impact on me over the years
I have to try and remember the concert order, as I didn't write it down like I did with Mariah. Mariah spent so much time tossing her hair and it was an open field wheras with Celine I was indoors in the dark and I didn't want to distract from actually watching Celine on stage.
I only filmed three of her performances the whole night, including "It's All Coming Back To Me Now", as that is my second-favourite song of all time So I just HAD to.
If the link works, this is what I filmed from my phone

Anyway, I do remember that she opened with "The Power Of Love". She started in the dark and walked out wearing this gorgeous golden pant-suit and sparkly silver shoes. Her hair was out and long. Of course she sounded amazing.
The thing about a Celine concert is that she LOVES to talk as much as she does to sing. She spoke about how it had been way too long since she had last been to our beautiful country and she even referred to my city as "Brizzy", which was cool It's what everyone calls us - that or Brizvegas. So she'd done her homework.
She sang a few songs that I hadn't expected, such as "Unison" during a bit of a medley part of the show. She also did the French version of "If You Asked Me To" which is always nice to listen to.
What surprised me the most however, was when she covered John Farnham's "You're The Voice"! Wowie, I did not expect that at all. It's like our unofficial national anthem haha.
She also did a tribute to Prince, by doing a few of his songs, including "Purple Rain", so that was nice.
She even held it together during "All By Myself". I'm sure about two years ago that would have been very tough to sing (I've seen Youtube footage) but now she's poised and held together and very thankful for her musical family and her fans.
One of her funniest talks was about how she came across the song "Ashes". Her story went on for aaaaaaaages and she had to apologize to her band members for holding them up for so long. I figured they must be used to it. Anyway, basically she has a huge crush on Ryan Renolds and was hoping to ACT in the movie rather than sing for the soundtrack She was showing us her acting skills on stage. I had to laugh at a post I saw from someone saying that Celine was proving to the crowd that at age 50, she has had no botox whatsoever. She does the funniest facial expressions and some of her dance moves made me chuckle.
Ooo look, someone's put it on Youtube Warning this goes on for 12 minutes, but it was even longer than that because she said a bit before this
Good on her!
I know this isn't a conventional review, but she's amazing. I'm half-tempted to go again tonight but unfortunately I have responsibilities and Celine's purse doesn't need any more of my cash, I'm sure
She closed with "My Heart Will Go On" and got such a resounding applause from the crowd that she genuinely seemed touched and came back out and joked that they had done the show and she wasn't sure what else she could sing to us. So she started singing the 'A,B,C...' song
She then did an acoustic of "Can't Help Falling In Love" which was just a gorgeous way to end the show. I feel like it wasn't planned, but I dunno!
Someone uploaded it to Youtube if you'd like a look.
