Since the use of the word "Bengino", as a synonym for "before my time", seems to have really caught on lately, I've had the idea of compiling a list of the greatest songs from the "Bengino" era.
I've defined the "Bengino era" as starting July 1, 2001, and ending February 18, 2005 (the day before my first chart). Songs which appeared on my first chart, dated February 19, 2005, are not eligible, even though they were all released in late 2004 or early 2005.
Since this week marks the 17th anniversary of the start of the Bengino era, I've decided the list should be comprised of 170 songs, 17 of which will be revealed each Friday over the next 10 weeks:
July 6 - Songs 170-154 July 13 - Songs 153-137 July 20 - Songs 136-120 July 27 - Songs 119-103 August 3 - Songs 102-86 August 10 - Songs 85-69 August 17 - [skipping this week as I'll be out of town] August 24 - Songs 68-52 August 31 - Songs 51-35 September 7 - Songs 34-18 September 14 - Songs 17-1
Before revealing any clues for the first set, to be revealed next Friday, here are the 17 songs which just BARELY missed it:
187. TLC - Damaged 186. DF Dub - Country Girl 185. Beyonce / Jay-Z - '03 Bonnie & Clyde 184. Sean Paul - Gimme The Light 183. Cam'ron - Hey Ma 182. Ginuwine - Hell Yeah 181. J.C. Chasez - Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love) 180. Nelly - Air Force Ones 179. Ashanti - Rock With U 178. Mya - My Love Is Like....Wo 177. Christina Aguilera - Dirrty 176. Trapt - Headstrong 175. J-Kwon - Tipsy 174. Beenie Man - Dude 173. Cassidy / R. Kelly - Hotel 172. Tweet - Oops (Oh My) 171. Shakira - Underneath Your Clothes

Clues for the first set, to be revealed on July 6: 170. Canadian one-hit wonder band whose lead singer sounds a lot like Avril Lavigne. 169. The signature song by a rapper who was later featured on a Janet Jackson single. 168. Pop-rock band from Florida which later had 2 minor Hot 100 appearances, although this one failed to chart. 167. The first artist that FreakyFlyBry ever described as "simply horrendous". 166. This song inspired JessieLou to make fun of the singer's last name, in a way that I found absolutely hilarious and have never forgotten since! 165. The second of 2 Hot 100 entries by a singer from Seattle; she had 2 charted hits for me later, both of which were mainstream flops. 164. The fourth single from an album that was huge during the Bengino era; its title doesn't quite appear in its lyrics. 163. This band's lead singer was huge during the early parts of my chart era, but the band didn't have an appearance for me until 7 years later; it's their second eligible song. 162. This band from California actually had 2 other Pop hits, which I had completely forgotten until earlier in 2018. 161. The breakout hit for a Canadian band whose name I used to confuse with that of an American band, whose breakout hit came around the same time. 160. The first hit by a singer managed by Joe Simpson. 159. The last pop hit by a country singer who had a number of major pop hits in 1998/99. 158. The first single by a band from Nevada whose last 2 albums failed to produce any pop hit singles. 157. The first of 2 eligible songs by a Christian crossover band. 156. The only appearance by an R&B singer whose name contains a word that @cdennisfan used to call me. 155. This one-hit novelty act has actually released 12 studio albums, per his Wikipedia page. 154. This song shares a title with an also-eligible minor follow-up hit by a singer who had a huge Pop hit just as the Bengino era was starting.

Afroman - Because I Got High All of those are correct except 168 and 163. 168 is a very good guess, and it does fit the clue, and indeed, I did like Only One more than Ocean Avenue (or Ocean Aveneww, as JessieLou would say ) Interestingly, the song in question charted between those two Yellowcard songs, and was featured on the soundtrack to a movie titled after a comic book superhero. 163 is also a good guess, but Matchbox 20 charted for me in 2007 with "How Far We've Come". Before I started charting, this band's last top 40 hit was a cover of a 1984 new wave hit.

I still can’t believe this is a thing lmfao Should we nominate it for Best Topic at the next awards? I suppose we should, although the REDFACE. topic from April 15th has already been mentioned as a possible nominee.....does that mean it could be Seb vs. Seb? Like Usher in 2010?
