I got there a bit early because the website said it started at 7:30pm but my ticket said 6:30pm so I arrived at 7pm and still had to wait grrr. Kate was performing at a venue in a dodgy part of town (lol) so I didn't really feel comfortable waiting in the line
Speaking of, I noticed I was the only male waiting to go in...
Anyway, the doors opened and in we went. My ticket was on my phone so I was conscious of not draining my battery, but I had a battery-pack with me for back up
I was there by myself and I'm quite tall, so I just grabbed a spot toward the side of the venue against the wall so that I wouldn't be in anyone's way, since it was a sold-out concert.
The support act was Alex Smith, who I think was from here? No idea. He was pretty good. Pretty funny, basically saying that he knew everyone was here for Tyler and Kate and to throw him a bone and buy his EP LOL. The songs he sang were pretty good, but I didn't buy the EP
Poor Alex Smith though. He was in the middle of one of his upbeat tracks when I noticed in front of me that one of the chicks who was up against the stage was now passed out flat ONTO the stage
Naturally, Alex stopped his set and called into the microphone for the venue manager. The house lights came on and a bunch of people were around this chick trying to get her to come around. Alex brought over his bottle of water for her. She came around after about 3 minutes and some people ushered her back out to the foyer. It was quite warm in this underground venue and there was no air-conditioning, and with a sold-out crowd, all that body-heat was pretty intense!
So yeah, THAT certainly was a shock. It shook Alex a bit too and he wasn't sure what to do, but the crowd cheered for him to keep going. He did well to just get back into the chorus of the track he was doing and he finished his set.
As I was at the side, I was near the door where Tyler and Kate were ushered in. I don't think they had any idea of what had just happened in their support act's set.
I was SO excited just to see Kate. I was a fan of hers purely from the one song, "Only Fooling Myself" back a whole 9 years ago in 2008! I've neer even seen One Tree Hill, which I guess is why most other people were there.
They were both wearing jackets over their shirts and I was thinking, "Wow are you guys insane?" It's Brisbane in Summer. I knew they wouldn't last long before removing clothes. Girls in the crowd were yelling out, "Take it off!" and Tyler was like, "You really don't want to see what's under here. It's like a furry Will Farrell beneath here," - so he had everyone laughing.
Tyler and Kate were really personable with the audience, both bouncing off each other, both making us laugh. They both sounded incredible. Naturally so for Kate, but I'm a bit biased
Once inside the venue, I did count about 5 other guys, but there were about 100 chicks
After a few songs, it became apparent that both Tyler and Kate were getting really uncomfy up there. Kate was the first to take her jacket off, but Tyler kept his on for ages! Tyler made a joke that if they were hot up on the stage, we must be dying down here in the crowd. He then suggested, "Just blow lightly on the back of the neck of the person in front of you to cool each other down," and Kate was like, "We're gonna have a hashtag #MeToo situation happening so probably don't do that." I just nodded and I'm pretty sure Kate saw me
Hilarious!
They didn't really have a set-list happening for our show (or so they said) as they said they enjoyed our vibe and were just 'fobbing it'. Coulda fooled me. They did a lot of duets and were backup singers for each other's songs.
It was Kate's birthday! So that means her birthday is 4 days after mine So everyone sang happy birthday to Kate
Also because it was her birthday, she told us that she'd released a new track at midnight, which she then sang for us. I'd listened to it earlier that day so I was so surprised to get to hear it live!
Unfortunately she didn't do "Only Fooling Myself" but she did do some other older ones
Tyler and Kate explained how they'd been trying to come out to Australia for years, but apparently tour managers etc wouldn't ever give them a fair go in the past. Tyler was like, "It was much more difficult than you might think,"
But then they said they were back in L.A. and they were saying how they were prepared to play for only a crowd of 3 or 4 people (I wish! haha) but were stunned when the venues kept selling out, and now the tour managers are begging THEM to come back to Australia.
They said they are going to come back every year from now on, but who knows how true that is I hope so!
I didn't get a photo with her, but I did leave a note on her Twitter just wishing her a happy birthday and "Soz about the heat ", which she 'liked'
YAY Kate! (oh and Tyler)
