DROPPERS:Krewella - Live For the Night (from 39) Midnight Red - Take Me Home (from 34) The revolving door of #1s keeps turning...only this week, it spins one back to the top, as Britney re-claims the crown for a second week. "Toxic" had many chances to return to #1 after it spent but one week on top back in 2004, but ultimately it was never able to. This week, Britney defies the specter of history repeating itself. Meanwhile, Drake has a similar specter hanging overhead even as "Hold On, We're Going Home" jumps 6-3. "Find Your Love" had an even bigger jump to that position back in 2010, only to stop dead at #2, thanks to Train's "If It's Love". Should "Hold On" miss the top as well, at least he won't have Train to blame once again, with "Bruises" falling 3-5 and set to go nowhere but down from here. With a half-bulletless Top 10, I'm due for a flush-out soon. Next week should see that start to happen. Meanwhile, the bottom of the chart is a bit rough at the moment, with just one bulletless song in the first fourteen and only three in the entire bottom half. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... -Mike

For those who are not aware, Britney's guest-hosting American Top 40 this weekend. Meanwhile, can she hold onto the top spot here on Mike's Top 40? Mike's Top 40 For the Week Ending: December 7, 2013 TW | LW | WOC | Artist | Title | Peak | 40 | -- | 1 | Gavin DeGraw | Make a Move | 40 | 39 | 39 | 2 | Zendaya | Replay | 39 | 38 | 38 | 3 | Michaela May | When You Say | 38 | 37 | 37 | 3 | Bastille | Pompeii | 37 | 36 | 40 | 2 | Eminem featuring Rihanna | The Monster | 36 | 35 | 26 | 15 | Parachute | Can't Help | 10 | 34 | 35 | 4 | The Fray | Love Don't Die | 34 | 33 | 34 | 4 | The 1975 | Chocolate | 33 | 32 | 32 | 6 | Melanie B | For Once in My Life | 32 | 31 | 25 | 10 | Travie McCoy featuring Jason Mraz | Rough Water | 22 | 30 | 33 | 4 | Fitz & The Tantrums | Out of My League | 30 | 29 | 19 | 15 | Pink featuring Lily Allen | True Love | 6 | 28 | 29 | 6 | Daughtry | Waiting For Superman | 28 | 27 | 31 | 5 | Steve Grand | Stay | 27 | 26 | 30 | 5 | Avril Lavigne featuring Chad Kroeger | Let Me Go | 26 | 25 | 27 | 7 | Lana Del Rey | Young & Beautiful | 25 | 24 | 28 | 8 | Five For Fighting | What If | 24 | 23 | 24 | 10 | Mary Lambert | She Keeps Me Warm | 23 | 22 | 18 | 10 | Emeli Sande | My Kind of Love | 18 | 21 | 17 | 15 | Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert | Same Love | 1 (5) | 20 | 23 | 10 | Avicii featuring Adam Lambert & Nile Rodgers | Lay Me Down | 20 | 19 | 22 | 10 | Zedd featuring Hayley Williams | Stay the Night | 19 | 18 | 20 | 7 | Lady Gaga featuring R. DROPPER:Taylor Swift & Ed Sheeran - Everything Has Changed (from 36) Answer: She can, and she can hold off a pair of Canadians AND a New Zealander to do it! Interesting fact: Turns out she's actually the second AT40 guest host to hold the #1 spot on my chart the same weekend they guest-hosted the AT40. I was thinking she'd have been the first - no, that was actually Gavin DeGraw, who guest-hosted the July 9, 2005 show; on my chart he was spending his 4th and final week on top with "Chariot". Oddly enough, the two book-end this week's chart here, with Gavin "making a move" to have the only debut of the week. And speaking of moves, the biggest downward move this week is 10 notches for "True Love". The biggest upward move is, yet again, 4 notches, which seven songs do this week (including the same pair of usual suspects ). The most impressive of those 4-notch movers this week, though, is probably "Thinking About You", moving from 10 to 6. He has five bulleted songs in front of him, but Calvin's definitely seeking his second #1 song with that one (the first was "We Found Love"). Meanwhile, as we shift to other impressive Top 10 movers, Sara Bareilles re-gains her bullet this week and goes back up to #5. We'll see if this turns out to be a full rebound or merely a short delay on her way down. In the realm of slow and steady movers, "Lay Me Down" reaches the Top 20 in its 10th week in the survey. Look for it to start speeding up over the course of this month, though. Note, though, that if this chart were still a Top 20, we'd be seeing a trio of "love" departures this week. Indeed, this is not a good week for "love" songs at all - the only one to move up is "Love Don't Die", and that's just up one notch to #34, while "Love Me Again" holds position at #15. And would you look at that: Newman's caught up in quite a mess of divas this week! And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... -Mike

More #Phun. Gus Pharaoh bonus points to you, Sir, phor continuing to demonstrate your appreciation phor Steve Grand's "Stay"! You are a latehead on the Trevor Guthrie jam, but it's all good... cuz that song kicks butt. It peaked at #3 on Mount #Phun. Gus and makes a most worthy addition to your latest top ten. Have a phungtastic week, Michael!

DROPPERS:Parachute - Can't Help (from 35) Travie McCoy featuring Jason Mraz - Rough Water (from 31) And the tide of the catfight at the top turns again, with Avril returning to #1 for a second week. This marks the first time in my chart's history (in any incarnation) where multiple-week #1s have traded the top spot back-and-forth with each other. And speaking of back-and-forths, Katy breaks free from her back-and-forth up the chart with Lady Gaga, and takes the week's biggest jump up five to #12. Pink's biggest drop of the week doubles that, and equals her drop from last week. I'm strangely feeling a little uninspired at the moment, so I'm going to cut the commentary short for this week. Until next week... -Mike

Two weeks ago, I pointed out that Britney became the second AT40 guest host to be at #1 the same week they hosted. Don't count on scrolling down to discover that that also happened for Katy Perry this week , though ( FreakyFlyBry) she does have the Biggest Mover once again this week... Mike's Top 40 For the Week Ending: December 21, 2013 TW | LW | WOC | Artist | Title | Peak | 40 | -- | 1 | Disclosure featuring Sam Smith | Latch | 40 | 39 | -- | 1 | Chris Wallace | Keep Me Crazy | 39 | 38 | 28 | 12 | Emeli Sande | My Kind of Love | 18 | 37 | 37 | 2 | Camryn | LoveSick | 37 | 36 | 40 | 2 | Colbie Caillat | Hold On | 36 | 35 | 31 | 8 | Melanie B | For Once in My Life | 31 | 34 | 36 | 3 | Gavin DeGraw | Make a Move | 34 | 33 | 35 | 5 | Bastille | Pompeii | 33 | 32 | 34 | 5 | Michaela May | When You Say | 32 | 31 | 33 | 4 | Eminem featuring Rihanna | The Monster | 31 | 30 | 32 | 6 | The Fray | Love Don't Die | 30 | 29 | 25 | 17 | Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert | Same Love | 1 (5) | 28 | 20 | 16 | Tegan & Sara | Closer | 8 | 27 | 30 | 6 | The 1975 | Chocolate | 27 | 26 | 27 | 8 | Daughtry | Waiting For Superman | 26 | 25 | 29 | 6 | Fitz & The Tantrums | Out of My League | 25 | 24 | 18 | 17 | Lady Gaga | Applause | 1 (1) | 23 | 26 | 7 | Steve Grand | Stay | 23 | 22 | 24 | 7 | Avril Lavigne featuring Chad Kroeger | Let Me Go | 22 | 21 | 23 | 9 | Lana Del Rey | Young & Beautiful | 21 | 20 | 22 | 12 | Mary Lambert | She Keeps Me Warm | 20 | 19 | 13 | 17 | Train featuring Ashley Monroe | Bruises | 1 (1) | 18 | 21 | 10 | Five For Fighting | What If | 18 | 17 | 11 | 16 | Paramore | Still Into You | 4 | 16 | 19 | 12 | Zedd featuring Hayley Williams | Stay the Night | 16 | 15 | 17 | 12 | Avicii featuring Adam Lambert & Nile Rodgers | Lay Me Down | 15 | 14 | 16 | 9 | Lady Gaga featuring R. DROPPERS:Pink featuring Lily Allen - True Love (from 39) Zendaya - Replay (from 38) Speaking of Britney...the Bitch just won't stop Working. She also makes chart history this week by having the first song to hit #1, fall out, then return to #1 - not once, but twice! Many songs have done this - hell, Britney and Avril aren't even the first two to have songs trade #1 back and forth for a bit. But no one, until this week, had hit #1, fallen out, returned to #1, fallen out again, then returned to #1 again! Suffice it to say that Britney's enjoying her biggest hit on my chart yet. Katy might be leaping from 12 to 6 this week, but even with as great of a song as Unconditionally is, she will not find the path to the top nearly so easily traveled from here on out. Meanwhile, knocking on death's door is the week's Biggest Dropper Emeli Sande, down 10 notches. Hayley goes back-to-back this week in the middle of the Top 20, but I'm starting to think that "Stay the Night" will not be as big of a hit here as either "Clarity" or "Still Into You" were. Even with as good of a song as it is, the field's grown intensely more competitive in the weeks since it landed here. Also showing signs of trouble is Daughtry. Since reaching the Top 30 four weeks ago, they've gone up only one step at a time since, and "Out of My League" is now the third song to leapfrog it in that four-week span. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... -Mike

Britney tries for a fifth week on top, while one of her immediate challengers, Armin van Buuren, debuts with a new one. Meanwhile, an R&B songstress from the 2000s returns to the Top 10 after eight years (and change) away. All this and more as my final chart of 2013 begins... ...right now. Mike's Top 40 For the Week Ending: December 28, 2013 TW | LW | WOC | Artist | Title | Peak | 40 | -- | 1 | Armin van Buuren featuring Cindy Alma | Don't Want to Fight Love Away | 40 | 39 | -- | 1 | Duke Dumont featuring A.M.E. | Need U (100%) | 39 | 38 | 40 | 2 | Disclosure featuring Sam Smith | Latch | 38 | 37 | 28 | 17 | Tegan & Sara | Closer | 8 | 36 | 39 | 2 | Chris Wallace | Keep Me Crazy | 36 | 35 | 37 | 3 | Camryn | LoveSick | 35 | 34 | 34 | 4 | Gavin DeGraw | Make a Move | 34 | 33 | 33 | 6 | Bastille | Pompeii | 33 | 32 | 29 | 18 | Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert | Same Love | 1 (5) | 31 | 36 | 3 | Colbie Caillat | Hold On | 31 | 30 | 32 | 6 | Michaela May | When You Say | 30 | 29 | 24 | 18 | Lady Gaga | Applause | 1 (1) | 28 | 31 | 5 | Eminem featuring Rihanna | The Monster | 28 | 27 | 19 | 18 | Train featuring Ashley Monroe | Bruises | 1 (1) | 26 | 30 | 7 | The Fray | Love Don't Die | 26 | 25 | 17 | 17 | Paramore | Still Into You | 4 | 24 | 26 | 9 | Daughtry | Waiting For Superman | 24 | 23 | 20 | 13 | Mary Lambert | She Keeps Me Warm | 20 | 22 | 27 | 7 | The 1975 | Chocolate | 22 | 21 | 25 | 7 | Fitz & The Tantrums | Out of My League | 21 | 20 | 23 | 8 | Steve Grand | Stay | 20 | 19 | 22 | 8 | Avril Lavigne featuring Chad Kroeger | Let Me Go | 19 | 18 | 21 | 10 | Lana Del Rey | Young & Beautiful | 18 | 17 | 18 | 11 | Five For Fighting | What If | 17 | 16 | 9 | 18 | Drake featuring Majid Jordan | Hold On, We're Going Home | 3 | 15 | 16 | 13 | Zedd featuring Hayley Williams | Stay the Night | 15 | 14 | 11 | 18 | Sara Bareilles | Brave | 1 (3) | 13 | 15 | 13 | Avicii featuring Adam Lambert & Nile Rodgers | Lay Me Down | 13 | 12 | 7 | 18 | Lorde | Royals | 4 | 11 | 14 | 10 | Lady Gaga featuring R. DROPPERS:Emeli Sande - My Kind of Love (from 38) Melanie B - For Once in My Life (from 35) Yes, Britney drops out of #1 once again...and this time, she will not be returning. Meanwhile, Calvin Harris sees his first #1 in his own right this week as "Thinking About You" goes to the top. Staying there will not be easy, as he's got Armin/Trevor, Christina, and Katy all breathing down his neck. Actually, in truth, this is probably the toughest Top 10 yet since I went to a Top 40. Not counting the two that have already been there, there's only two, maybe three songs currently up there that really don't have any chance of going all the way to the top. And right outside the Top 10 are "Do What U Want" and "Lay Me Down", also itching to make a run for it. Suffice it to say, it'll be at least a month before anyone below that has a real shot to reach the upper tier (meaning the Top 10). Meanwhile, Colbie Caillat and The 1975 share Big Mover honors this week with their five-notch jumps (the latter of which becoming the latest to leapfrog Daughtry), as Tegan & Sara take the week's Biggest Drop down nine. With the bulletless songs in the middle of the chart, it's going to feel like rush hour there for a little while as songs go moving upward only to slow down with the tough Top 10 in the way. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. As I won't be having a year-end chart due to the six-month layoff this year, we'll see you all in 2014! -Mike

DJs duel it out for the top spot this week as one of them, Calvin Harris, tries to take his run at the top into the new year. And while I didn't have a year-end chart for 2013, my top song of the year would absolutely be "Same Love" (which is still charting here). 2014 kicks off with a song in quite a similiar spirit as that one... Mike's Top 40 For the Week Ending: January 4, 2014 TW | LW | WOC | Artist | Title | Peak | 40 | -- | 1 | Melissa Etheridge | Uprising of Love (Remix) | 40 | 39 | -- | 1 | CHVRCHES | We Sink | 39 | 38 | 40 | 2 | Armin van Buuren featuring Cindy Alma | Don't Want to Fight Love Away | 38 | 37 | 39 | 2 | Duke Dumont featuring A.M.E. | Need U (100%) | 37 | 36 | 38 | 3 | Disclosure featuring Sam Smith | Latch | 36 | 35 | 29 | 19 | Lady Gaga | Applause | 1 (1) | 34 | 32 | 19 | Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert | Same Love | 1 (5) | 33 | 25 | 18 | Paramore | Still Into You | 4 | 32 | 35 | 4 | Camryn | LoveSick | 32 | 31 | 36 | 3 | Chris Wallace | Keep Me Crazy | 31 | 30 | 33 | 6 | Bastille | Pompeii | 30 | 29 | 34 | 5 | Gavin DeGraw | Make a Move | 29 | 28 | 30 | 7 | Michaela May | When You Say | 28 | 27 | 23 | 14 | Mary Lambert | She Keeps Me Warm | 20 | 26 | 31 | 4 | Colbie Caillat | Hold On | 26 | 25 | 16 | 19 | Drake featuring Majid Jordan | Hold On, We're Going Home | 3 | 24 | 28 | 6 | Eminem featuring Rihanna | The Monster | 24 | 23 | 24 | 10 | Daughtry | Waiting For Superman | 23 | 22 | 26 | 8 | The Fray | Love Don't Die | 22 | 21 | 22 | 8 | The 1975 | Chocolate | 21 | 20 | 21 | 8 | Fitz & The Tantrums | Out of My League | 20 | 19 | 12 | 19 | Lorde | Royals | 4 | 18 | 14 | 19 | Sara Bareilles | Brave | 1 (3) | 17 | 20 | 9 | Steve Grand | Stay | 17 | 16 | 19 | 9 | Avril Lavigne featuring Chad Kroeger | Let Me Go | 16 | 15 | 18 | 11 | Lana Del Rey | Young & Beautiful | 15 | 14 | 17 | 12 | Five For Fighting | What If | 14 | 13 | 15 | 14 | Zedd featuring Hayley Williams | Stay the Night | 13 | 12 | 13 | 14 | Avicii featuring Adam Lambert & Nile Rodgers | Lay Me Down | 12 | 11 | 11 | 11 | Lady Gaga featuring R. DROPPERS:Tegan & Sara - Closer (from 37) Train featuring Ashley Monroe - Bruises (from 27) Alas, Calvin is unable to fend off Armin this week - and don't be surprised if Armin suffers the same fate next week, with Christina and Katy waiting in the wings. There's more bad news for another DJ in the Top 10, Martin Garrix, as "Animals" is almost certainly peaking. I'd say this is to be the beginning of the end for him - though getting up to #6 is nothing to sneeze at. Wait...more? Yes - I'm beginning to think that "Stay the Night" might miss the Top 10. I still like the song, but it's getting squeezed out by others going up that I like more. Also very likely peaking (finally) is Daughtry. A shame for the band who had the #1 song of 2010 here with "Life After You". Among this week's debuts, the remix for "Uprising of Love" is the Bent Collective Radio Mix, the one posted over in Play or Trash. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... -Mike

It's a week of firsts this week on Mike's Top 40 - check out my commentary below to get the full story! DROPPERS:Lady Gaga - Applause (from 35) Paramore - Still Into You (from 33) And this week, it's Christina who takes the crown. Believe it or not, this is her first #1 song on my chart - her previous best was back in 2003, when she took "Dirrty" to #2. Speaking of firsts, Melissa Etheridge hasn't had a song reach my chart until now, either. This week, she starts off with a bang as "Uprising of Love" has the week's Biggest Move, up nine. MORE ON FIRSTS: Not counting features, 21 acts - just over half the chart! - have their first chart appearance on my chart in this week's Top 40. In truth, that was true last week as well: Paramore's first song to chart drops out this week, replaced with The Saint Johns in their chart debut. Very obviously that is a chart record, though this is one made fully possible by the chart now being a Top 40. And waiting in the wings are a few more artists looking to get their first chart single here as well, so it's possible that that number could still go up in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" started out at #14, and ultimately didn't go any higher. This week, "Young & Beautiful" bests that mark as it goes up to 13. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... -Mike

DROPPERS:Drake featuring Majid Jordan - Hold On, We're Going Home (from 37) Lorde - Royals (from 29) Kind of funny that the two recurrents from this past Sunday's pop chart are the two droppers this week, eh? Christina remains at the summit this week, but here comes Katy looking to collect her 7th #1... After a long, slow climb upward, "Lay Me Down" finally reaches Top 10 territory this week as it moves 11-9 - and its race is certainly not over yet. Lana Del Rey also continues her trek upward, and jumps 13-10. Looks like "Stay the Night" has petered out with a #12 peak. As good as it is, it just wasn't holding up as well as other songs around it or ahead of it. Although "The Monster" reaches Top 20 territory this week, I don't expect it to go much further, either. One who will go much further, however, is Melissa Etheridge, who continues her uprising this week with another Big Move, up 10 notches. FUN WITH NAMES: We have Camryn moving up to #27 this week, and debuting at #40 is...Karmin. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... -Mike

Ugh, late again. Yay for being out of commission the past couple days. No matter... From the "Big Things Come in Small Packages" files: The chart facts and figures behind this week's sole debut, told in this week's chart commentary below... DROPPER:Daughtry - Waiting For Superman (from 33) The only debut of the week comes from Neon Trees. They've got some big shoes to fill with their new single, as they took "Everybody Talks" to #1. That spent 2 weeks there, but took four-and-a-half months to get there (and five of those weeks were at #2!) - and that song was #1 for all of 2012, as well. Early indicators are that this one is much more likely to be one to fly upward fast and score more weeks at the top. We'll see how it fares. On another note: Interesting that this week they replace the act with 2010's #1 song of the year - Daughtry. And oh yes, when "Everybody Talks" debuted, the sole dropper that week was Gavin DeGraw's "Not Over You" - which as it happens, is the top song for the entire 2010-2012 chart era here. Some big stuff happening in one little debut here! Meanwhile, a bigger package...of sorts...sits atop the chart this week. As I mentioned last week, "Unconditionally" becomes Katy Perry's 7th #1 song here on my chart. That breaks a tie with Train for second place among all artists. And, it looks like the de facto top song of last year, "Same Love" is now finally at the end of its run, as it drops to #40 this week. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... -Mike

A bit of a change-up this week - Imma list the droppers first. Because you see, we have 7 debuts this week - which means, 7 songs have to spin out. And here they are: "Same Love", "She Keeps Me Warm", "Brave", "Pompeii", "What If", "Rock & Roll", and "When You Say". Those 7 hits, fall out. Now...on with the show! Mike's Top 40 For the Week Ending: February 1, 2014 TW | LW | WOC | Artist | Title | Peak | 40 | -- | 1 | Hunter Hayes | Invisible | 40 | 39 | -- | 1 | Beyonce featuring Jay-Z | Drunk in Love | 39 | 38 | -- | 1 | Foster The People | Coming of Age | 38 | 37 | -- | 1 | Kacey Musgraves | Follow Your Arrow | 37 | 36 | -- | 1 | Rudimental featuring Emeli Sande | Free | 36 | 35 | -- | 1 | Britney Spears | Alien | 35 | 34 | -- | 1 | Darling Parade | Crash & Burn | 34 | 33 | 37 | 3 | Karmin | I Want it All | 33 | 32 | 38 | 2 | Neon Trees | Sleeping With a Friend | 32 | 31 | 36 | 3 | Paramore | Ain't it Fun | 31 | 30 | 33 | 4 | The Saint Johns | Open Water | 30 | 29 | 20 | 18 | Zedd featuring Hayley Williams | Stay the Night | 12 | 28 | 29 | 5 | CHVRCHES | We Sink | 28 | 27 | 28 | 6 | Armin van Buuren featuring Cindy Alma | Don't Want to Fight Love Away | 27 | 26 | 19 | 18 | Martin Garrix | Animals | 6 | 25 | 30 | 4 | Beyonce | XO | 25 | 24 | 21 | 10 | Eminem featuring Rihanna | The Monster | 20 | 23 | 25 | 9 | Gavin DeGraw | Make a Move | 23 | 22 | 16 | 20 | Britney Spears | Work Bitch! | 1 (4) | 21 | 27 | 7 | Disclosure featuring Sam Smith | Latch | 21 | 20 | 26 | 6 | Duke Dumont featuring A.M.E. | Need U (100%) | 20 | 19 | 23 | 8 | Camryn | LoveSick | 19 | 18 | 22 | 7 | Chris Wallace | Keep Me Crazy | 18 | 17 | 17 | 12 | The 1975 | Chocolate | 17 | 16 | 18 | 12 | The Fray | Love Don't Die | 16 | 15 | 15 | 8 | Colbie Caillat | Hold On | 15 | 14 | 14 | 12 | Fitz & The Tantrums | Out of My League | 14 | 13 | 9 | 18 | John Newman | Love Me Again | 7 | 12 | 12 | 13 | Steve Grand | Stay | 12 | 11 | 11 | 13 | Avril Lavigne featuring Chad Kroeger | Let Me Go | 11 | 10 | 6 | 20 | Calvin Harris featuring Ayah Marar | Thinking About You | 1 (1) | 9 | 5 | 18 | Armin van Buuren featuring Trevor Guthrie | This is What it Feels Like | 1 (1) | 8 | 10 | 15 | Lana Del Rey | Young & Beautiful | 8 | 7 | 13 | 5 | Melissa Etheridge | Uprising of Love (Remix) | 7 | 6 | 8 | 18 | Avicii featuring Adam Lambert & Nile Rodgers | Lay Me Down | 6 | 5 | 7 | 15 | Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly | Do What U Want | 5 | 4 | 2 | 17 | Christina Aguilera | We Remain | 1 (2) | 3 | 4 | 15 | Ciara | Overdose | 3 | 2 | 3 | 18 | Ellie Goulding | Burn | 2 | 1 | 1 | 15 | Katy Perry | Unconditionally | 1 (2) |
Fun fact: This is the third time in my chart's history where there have been 7 debuts on a given week. The first two times happened following multi-week chart freezes, making this set of 7 all the more noteworthy for that not being the case. In all three cases, however, Katy Perry wore the chart's crown. :kii: The first was 2/12/11, with "Firework" spending its 7th and final week at the top, and the second was 8/19/12, with "Wide Awake" hitting the top. And this week, of course, "Unconditionally" is up there for its second week. In the bridesmaid's position for a second time is Ellie Goulding, up to #2 with "Burn". Can she seize the crown this time on her own, or will she stop there once again? The ex-#1s falling out this week mean that two more ex-#1s now take their place as the oldest songs on the chart. (Who knew "Work Bitch!" would one week earn that distinction? ) After having runaway Biggest Mover honors for the past three weeks...straight, Melissa Etheridge now has to share that honor with three others this week as they all go up six. Meanwhile, the twilight appears to be fading on "Stay the Night", as it slides nine for the week's Biggest Drop and becomes the lowest-ranked bulletless song. Though it's at #29, it still stands a good chance of dropping out next week. TOUGH TIMES IN THE TEENS THIS WEEK: Five songs all holding position in that region. One of those, "Chocolate", spends a third week at its position. Oh, and you know how I mentioned that Ciara's previous best was taking "1, 2 Step" to #4 here? Well, "Overdose" tied that mark last week and this week bests that by advancing one more to #3. Now...let's take a closer look at those 7 debuts: "Invisible" - The second chart appearance for Hunter Hayes. "Wanted" was approaching the Top 10 last year when my chart hit shutdown. Suffice it to say, the latter shouldn't be happening this time, and its message should be all the more helpful for it. "Drunk in Love" - This is me doing a 180 on this song; I couldn't stand it when I first heard it. We'll see how this fares with "XO" still going up. On that note...here's another fun fact: With this song's debut, not counting artists following up a song close to hitting #1 (and there's been a few of those in recent months), Beyonce becomes only the second artist to have two songs charting here and both going up. The first was Avril Lavigne with a pair of album tracks off of Let Go in 2003. "Coming of Age" - First appearance for Foster The People; I despised "Pumped Up Kicks" and never heard "Don't Stop (Color On the Walls)". "Follow Your Arrow" - Yes, I know I'm late to the party on this one. I'm giving it a run anyway. End of story. "Free" - Emeli Sande's fourth chart appearance in only a year's time; girl's got some consistency going here. And this definitely has Top 10 potential, just like her last feature "Beneath Your Beautiful" did. "Alien" - While Britney may still be deciding on a third single (or even whether or not to have one), I'm going to go with this as a follow-up to "Work Bitch!" Can't say this has instant #1 potential like that did, but it's her best shot for the time being. "Crash & Burn" - Perhaps an unlikely choice for the highest of the 7 debuts, but it's certainly earned that position this week, as it's got a sound that I'm really into. Phew......and I'm......spent. Until next week... -Mike

There's just one dropper this week, "Stay the Night" by Zedd featuring Hayley Williams (LW: 29). Replacing it is another sort of "staying the night" song...that lays it all out a little more clearly. Oh and maybe you might've seen this coming, but there's a big jump to #1 this week... Well, the last time we saw a large jump to #1 was when Adele did that with "Rumour Has It" (8-1). Now, the Top 40 chart era sees its first large jump to the top, courtesy of an uprising helmed by one Melissa Etheridge. Her speedy 6-week rise to the top will probably be the fastest in the Top 40 era for quite some time to come. Not a great deal of movement in the bottom reaches this week, but it really was to be expected. No worries - the coming weeks should easily be better. And though Melissa's leap to #1 was certainly impressive, it's Neon Trees who have the week's Biggest Move, up 9 notches to #23. PEAKING (or Peaked Last week): "Burn", "Do What U Want", "Chocolate", "Make a Move", "We Sink". Actually, though "Hold On" went up three this week, it looks to be peaking as well. "LoveSick", on the other hand, isn't peaking yet though it holds at #19. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... -Mike
